Mainly when the French (and many other countries) decided not to support the US's unilateral actions vs Iraq in the UN. The rednecks (i.e. ultra-conservatives, not neocons) think its cool to make fun of the French.

"We saved their asses in WWII!"

the 'french are winps' attitude has been around a lot longer than that.

Exactly. Like I said, since Napoleon was defeated. So..200 some years. Not long, considering the French have been around much longer than that.

you can't read your own posts, can you?

Ahem.."MAINLY". I don't remember Anti-French sentiment being so rampant 10 years ago. Only in the past year or two has it been widespread. The whole "freedom fries" and "freedom toast" redneck crap hasn't been around that long.

"Freedom fries" might not have been around, but the French-surrender jokes have been around forever. It's not like they disappeared for 50 years and just came back last year.

I think it came about after World War 2.

I never understood it, though... even if the French had stood up to the Nazis, no good would have come of it -- they'd still have lost, they'd just have a higher body count and Paris would have been destroyed.

/gotta stand up for the motherland

The French did stand up to the nazi's. The problem with their defense was it was based on a ground invasion. The Luftwaffe (German Airforce) obliterated their defense from the air leaving little standing in their way.

It's cool to hate France in America, just like it's cool to hate America everywhere else in the world.

I would like to hold my country to higher standards than the rest of the worlds, but oh well.

"The last time the French asked for 'more proof' it came marching into Paris under a German flag."

That's in someone's sig isn't it? Or it used to be.

Edit: It appears to be in Feldenak's.. I knew someone had it.

Oh please. It was not NEAR as rampant in the 80's and 90's as it is now. The attitude has been there, but never has it been this strong.

France is like the US, except that it can't really live up to great power. I guess that along with their military failures are why a lot of people started to call them wimps and other such words.

This has been around for a damn long time though.

Uhh, you are observant, aren't you?

I've noticed that any criticism of the French is now called 'French Bashing'. It is as if nobody is allowed to be critical of the French while many are critical of other countries.

Same with being critical of America. Dissent=Treachory, treason. Blind Obedience=Patriotism.

Yeah I am observing that you are an idiot.

Letterman is no longer on NBC, and he hasnt been on for years (10+?).

Hey, I got one half of the statement! Gimme credit for that at least 🙂

Edit: To be perfectly honest, I didn't notice the NBC part, maybe because I don't watch late-night TV.

You make a nice example. Lets just let them in here and the higher body count will belong to our allies when they come to save our ass.

Yep. It's strange because these two are from the opposite sides of the spectrum but are so similar.

It came from the people who have a stake in splitting US from its' allies and pursuing a unilateral and unrestrained foreign policy. So that way when the French say there is no reason to start a war in Iraq, they can say the French are wimps, and then start the war. Enjoy your freedom fries.

once again, it is much older than just the Iraqi war...

ignoring the fact that the French were supporting Hussein's regime and subverting the UN sanctions. Right?
