I believe minendo is correct. The phrase "beat you like I own you" comes to mind.

I always saw it in games, around the Quake 3 era,
for instance, "I just owned your ass in that 1v1 match"

owned is originally hacker talk. Back in the day (circra 98 -99) if you find your way into some box and get root, youd "own" it. So people started defacing sites with stuff like
"NT ... No Thanks. Owned by Halik" or something similar. I'm not really sure how it got mainstream though.

<-- rooted many machines. Great way to get a job too. I once showed up at the interview and told em their root password. I remeber it to this day "pRay4pay" :D
