Where did the word neff come from?

From what I've read, there was a user named "Nef" who posted useless crap in other people's threads to get his post count up.

I think nef evolved from the term troll. How? I have no idea.

But my first experience with troll is from Caputo.

Nef could have also come from nerf. Neffing a thread versus nerfing a thread seems to be interchangable.
