Where did all the Counter-Strike players go?

Just wondering where the CS addicts are now getting their fix. I just can't get into BF1942... the control really sucks in my opinion. Soldier of Fortune 2 was good, but now there's hardly 100 servers listed on GameSpy, and most have dumbass mods on them. So yeah, where did all the CS junkies migrate to?

Call of Duty maybe? What about Enemy Territory?

Jeff, since you are SOF2 fan, I need some recommendations for some good DM maps for 2-4 people. My brother and I plan on deathmatching over the holidays and I got him SOF2 for Christmas. I've ran around on a few of the default DM maps, but most of those seem too large for only a few players?

Any maps you'd recommend?

Well there's the popular Jordan Market, that's probably the best for a DM... then there's the fairly new Jordan Backstreets, which is decent. Ummm... Streets of Prague is ok... there really aren't any small maps unless you download custom ones. There's a "port" of Italy from CS that's pretty good, as well as dust and aztec.

I haven't played it in so long cause I can't find any decent servers... they have such stupid mods... I wish I could find one that doesn't have any mods, just runs the latest anti-cheat software. The only mod I can stand is real damage mods.

waiting for csrealism.com to come out with a patch. csrealism for 1.5 made it look so much better. now i can't stand 1.6... ugly....! csrealism has guns and models that are high poly/high res that they look like they come frmo current games. even though the levels still look ugly it makes a huge difference

I just started playing CS recently, after not playing it much for a long time. CS is one of the few games that still runs well on my old Pent III 700.

Steam works fine for me, and there are still tons of CS servers....

'course the wall hack, aim bot cheaters are all still around.

Come back to CS. :)

The cheating stuff is also a negative part of CS... if I could find some decent servers it would be fun still... hell, if I could find some servers that still run 1.3, that would be awesome.

Yea, cheating chased me out of it.

Snippers shooting through walls. Snippers getting headshots while running and jumping.

Seems like a lot of people don't like 1.6, but I think its a hundred times better. A lot of cs player went to 1.6, but still enough are playing 1.5. I also love 1942 with desert combat. I would rather shoot people AND be able to missle them from an apache.

Steam was a pain to get working at first, but now it works perfectly for me and it's easier than the old interface.

Raven Shield

See my sig- I'm not making that up. If you like CS, you owe it to yourself to try RS. It's much much better.

Give yourself a Christmas present, you won't be disappointed

Edit: Cheating is virtually nonexist in RS. And there are plenty of people playing it.

Another Edit: I used to be into Counter-Strike hardcore. I played it nearly everyday for 2.5 years. Cheating chased me out of it. Even if the cheating was completely eliminated, I wouldn't care. CS just cannot compete with RS.

I was torn when I went to 1.6 but now it's OK with me. When I don't play that I play wolfenstein enemy territory - try it again, it's pretty good.

I'm thinking of going halo but I really hate supporting a microsoft product more than I have to.

they all still play CS. 1.6 hasn't affected match play much in the grand scheme of things.

I was an old school HARDCORE CS player....and Ive never really recovered:( I dont play what CS has become....but I really havent found anything to fill the place that CS holds. I have found nothing that is as great as late night clan matches with CS...nothing:(

I dont play CS anymore....but Im still looking for something that gives me the same feeling....and probablly will never find it!:(

CS is still my #1 computer game and has been for more than 4 years.

My server is still running CS1.5 and will for as long as possible, I also hate steam and everything it represents.

Man, you talk about CS more passionately than most people talk about their girlfriend.

1.6 wasn't too bad. I like the new guns and stuff, but the shield was lame and cheap.

PS, I could always use another CS key to get friends to play. :)

Raven Shield. CS is like garbage compared to RS.

a famous counter-strike hacker recently "hacked" 1.6 so you can play it without steam installed at all. i suggest searching for it if you hate steam so much, though i don't see why people still complain about it. yes, it had its problems at first (like any program in its infancy) but has since become pretty reliable IMO.

on a side note, the CS players didn't go anywhere. there are more people playing online now than there have ever been before:)

I wasn't really a huge fan of either Rainbox Six or Roque Spear, especially online. I did play the single player part of Rainbow Six, but I never got into the multiplayer. Raven Shield is a ton better than either of the first two games. And Ghost Recon isn't nearly as good as Raven Shield either. I didn't like Raven Shield at first, mostly because the first thing I played was the singleplayer demo. And thing singleplayer isn't all that great if you ask me. It's pretty much just Rainbow Six with better graphics and new weapons. The multiplayer is where Raven Shield shines. Tons of great-looking maps, great graphics, lots of guns (and they actually have 1st person models now, as opposed to all the other Clancy games), and plenty of people playing online. If the more fast-paced maps are your thing (think Iceworld in CS), there is a whole set of RS maps out that are very similar and are played online. After playing RS, CS is just so....old. CS used to be all I played, now it's second rate in my book. It just cannot compare to RS in any department. I'm sure that if half the CS players out there tried playing RS online, they'd throw away CS in a heartbeat. It's a shame that everyone is so stuck on CS. And all the crappy CS clones didn't help either. Too bad CS won't die off until CS2 rolls around sometime early next decade.
