Well if it's different than the earLier Clancy titles, maybe I'll give it a try.

Is there a demo?

Raven Shield Demos

You really need to play the multiplayer to get the best out of this game. That's where it shines, and thats where it kicks the crap out of CS or any of the CS clones.

the game went from fast-paced like quake/unreal to very slow and tactical. it takes more than just good aim to do well now.

It went from having cool weapons, good sounds, and not too many cheaters to having crappy weapons with crappy sounds and craploads of cheaters.

Well no, that's not all, explaining why I think CS has become gradually worse ever since .52(the peak) would be something that would take some time even face to face, so I won't even bother here, suffice to say, it's far more boring than it used to be.

Man, you talk about CS more passionately than most people talk about their girlfriend.

he talks about it passionately because steam basically represents the death of free CS servers.
i am 90% sure that once steam CS comes out of beta, 1.5 will be unplayable.

The powers that be have stated specifically that once steam is running reliable they plan to pull the plug on won support of 1.5 servers, so yes, 1.5 will die.

The problem I see with steam is that people with older comps will no longr be able to play and will be lost to the community. In addition, the cs community has been split in two since steam's inception.

Add to that my contention that it won't be long before steam becomes a paid subscription-only service.

Maybe raven shield is in my future😀

they didn't get rid of any weapons. they made the sounds crispers. they added guns to attract new players. valve is a company founded on making money. it is illogical to hate them for that. and it seems like some of you try to find servers with cheaters in them just so you can complain about it. just like all online games there are cheaters but when your game has to be open source it's going to be a bigger invitation to hackers. a simple solution is make friends and play on private servers. then you don't have to worry about it. there are more cs servers now than there have ever been before so i'm sure you can find a few without cheaters.

people have to accept that it went from a deathmatch-like shooter to a slow, tactical game.

5.2 was hardly anymore of a dm shooter, in fact I'd say it was less so since dying was so easy, heck one or two shots from pretty much any weapon and you were dead meat.
As for the weapons, I just think they were way better back then, the Para was useful once in a while, Colt kicked ass, ah the good ole days 🙂

And I haven't blamed Valve, have I? Im not blaming anyone, I don't think they made the game worse intentionally, Im just sorry that they did, I'd love to still be playing 5.2, but there are no servers around anymore 🙁

So is Raven Shield mp really that good? I've enjoyed the RB6 games to an extent, mostly single-player, but the multi-player always felt lacking to CS. The shotting just never felt right... I mean in CS you fire and see where your bullets are going but just was never like that in RB6/Rogue Spear, etc... I might give the MP demo of Raven Shield a try. IIRC, I played the single player one and wasn't very impressed. Seemed the same as the rest of the RB6 games.

RTCW:Enemy Territory and Americas Army aren't very big hits or what?

I totally agree with you. Rainbox Six and Rogue Spear never measured up to Counter-Strike. They just were not nearly as fun. Plus you always had to play them through "the zone", which was just stupid. It was a hasssle, it was hard to find games....etc. Raven Shield is 10x the multiplayer game that R6 or Roque Spear were. And I hate to beat a dead horse here, but Raven Shield kicks Counter-Strike's ass in every imaginable category, including fun. After playing Raven Shield online for awhile, I will never go back to Counter-Strike, there's no point. Raven Shield is like a modern version of Counter-Strike. Sure, they keep updating CS, but lets face it, it isn't all that much different than the game that came out ~4 years ago. The maps in RS are much more detailed, there are waaaay more weapons than CS, and in my opinion there is a lot more strategy involved. The gun you choose makes a huge difference (one of the many pistols, machine pistols, assualt rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, or light machine guns) and the various "accessories" can be used to great effect. The flashbangs have enough flash and bang to really put someone out of business, the smoke and gas grenades effectively disorient people, and the frags actually get you kills, unlike CS (unless they changed the nade damage in CS lately, I really don't remember). Plus the addition of an extended mag, a silencer, or a mini-scope can really change the attributes of a gun. I could go on and on about all the ways that RS is better than CS- once you play RS online you'll understand.

As for the singleplayer, well, it's pretty much just a more polished version of Rainbow Six. To be honest, I haven't even played through the whole game, and I've had it since May. I don't waste my time with singleplayer. I did the same thing you did, I played the singleplayer demo and kind of dismissed the game. I'm sure a lot of people did the same thing, and its really a shame. So many tens of thousands of people playing CS who would have a better time playing RS.

In conclusion, buy Raven Shield, you won't regret it.

Edit: You can see I'm pushing this pretty hard, I'm not making this stuff up.

OK,CubicZirconia, you've sparked my interest. But, is there a problem with cheats, if so, is it as widespread as in CS?

I gave up on CS (don't remember the version, but punkbuster was in use) when some people could again jump, hop, and run and get HS kills with the AWM without even standing still. I haven' been back, that was much more than a year ago.

Went to BF1942 and loved it so much I had to break the CD and threw away the key.

But, is there a problem with cheats, if so, is it as widespread as in CS?

No, I have been playing since May and I have seen maybe one cheater. He was doing really really well, almost too well. It's possible he wasn't cheating though. Considering I have never seen anyone else cheat, I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

Edit: RS has punkbuster too, but even before the punkbuster patch came out I hadn't seen anyone cheat.

I've been trying to play Raven Shield online and I can't connect to any servers... not on GameSpy, and not from within the game itself... I have the latest patches and it never connects.

*EDIT* So that's one area RS is lacking... anyone who can click a mouse can play CS... it seems that's not the case with RS.

Finally got it working... and oh my god, that is so NOT anything like CS. LOL... movement is so freakin slow and people can throw grenades WAY too far... feels like the whole game is in slow motion and low gravity.

The general gameplay is very similar to CS. It isn't nearly as fast, but that doesn't mean it's worse. I wouldn't say you can throw grenades too far, it works out perfectly in pretty much all the levels. It's not like you're throwing bricks around, they're only grenades.

As far as the slowmo thing, I guess that's a matter of opinion. If you compare it to CS, maybe that's the case. After you play it for awhile it seems perfectly normal. Give it some time, you'll end up liking it.

Just remember, you're not playing CS, you're playing RS. Yes, things will seem different at first, but after a little while it will grow on you.

I've never had a problem with RS. And lets not forget about Steam. Either way, glad you got it working.

Ok. I played raven shield. I HATE tom clancy games. I hate them with a passion. Slow, totally not anything near the quality of cs. People actually become JUNKIES on cs. i couldnt even imagine playing that game longer than an hour without totally getting tired of it.
Cs still rules the online community. As long as steam keeps it free... it probably always will.

Your loss. If you can't imagine playing it more than an hour, you didn't give the game enough of a chance. I play it all the time, and I can no longer stand CS. I lauged when I read: "totally not anything near the quality of cs." I would say exactly the opposite. In my opinion, RS is better than CS in every conceivable way (and I used to be a CS "junkie", believe me). The RS demo sucks, so don't even bother judging the game based on that. The singleplayer isn't all that great either. Online multiplayer is where it shines.

Cs still rules the online community

Based on numbers, nothing else comes close. Quality, in my opinion, is another story entirely.

I urge you to give RS another chance online, you'll like it if you give it a chance. I kept going back to CS, but RS finally tore me away. Now I can't even imagine playing CS, the game is laughable to me.

I really like Soldier of Fortune 2, but the maps are getting boring, and good servers are getting harder and harder to find.

I still play good ole Quake 2, almost always vanilla DM. I really like the fast-paced intensity, and concentration requirements (at least for how I play). I didn't like the physics with Quake 3, compared to Quake 2 anyway, and I haven't tried many other online FPS games (none actually that come to mind, save for Delta Force like once or twice, and maybe Unreal Tournament a bit too I think).

I've never really been much of a fan of team-based games, so taking that into account, I probably wouldn't like CS would I? Quake 2 is faced paced, you can bounce around a map really quick, requires good mouse control to really be "good" using the weapons. Takes quick reflexes to dodge rockets, and it's just what I like best. Wish more people played it these days though =P More competition is good. Also, after playing Quake 2 off and on for 4+ years, I still see myself improving, getting better mouse control, playing more relaxed and thus playing better, which still pushes me to continue playing. I've also been in the same clan for like almost 3 years now I think, and staying in communication with those guys keep my interest. I play as Punk>FAS> btw, but can't play as of late cuz of problems with an old Voodoo3 I'm having to use for the time being =(

Anyway, anybody still like Quake 2? Sorry to change the topic....

I will say I have been tempted to try CS, just because everybody hypes it as the best game ever, at least online anyway.

OCNewbie, I don't mean to be an ass, but what country are you from? I've been seeing people use the word "save" in place of "except." I can't figure out if that's a regional thing in the US... or a UK thing, or an Aussie thing or what... but it's definately not proper english. =)

*EDIT* My mistake, I looked it up and save CAN be used in place of except... just doesn't sound right... hmmmm, guess we really do learn something new every day 😀
