Where can one legally get music for a REASONABLE price, now that allofmp3.com is dead?

Greetings,

Now that allofmp3.com is dead, are there any legal music sites out there with prices even close to reasonable?
Considering the production costs of making a CD and packaging are non-existent for digital music distribution, I see no reason why I should have to pay 99 cents for a track in a format I don't want that also has digital rights crap embedded in it.
(That would sometimes add up to make buying the CD the cheaper option if you were to download each track.)
As a musician that's made an album, I don't expect to pay much more than 25 cents (maybe up to 50 cents) for a 5 minute track in 192 kbps MP3 format with NO digital rights management crap embedded.
Serious replies appreciated.

I have a subscription to emusic.com You probably won't find the craptastic song of the week on there, but if you look around they have a lot of good music. They have a very nice jazz selection, and they specialize in indie groups. Check it out, try not to be close minded about having to have music your familiar with, and you'll come up with some great material.

Btw, if you like oldies, be very careful about getting those kind of tracks. A lot of them are substandard live performances, or remakes after the artists prime. You can hear a 30 second preview of the songs, and user comments can be very helpful in determining whether it's good material or not. I find the average emusic subscriber is more educated, and insightful than the average top 40 listener for reviews.

Another good free source of good music is your public library. They have CDs and you can check them out and rip 'em. :)

yeah but that's not exactly legal. even though you can take books from your public library, there's still copyright and you can't legally copy the book.

OP expects to find songs for a quarter each, Verizon charges me 3 bucks to download a song to my CELL PHONE! And if I want a ring tone of it, another 2-3 bucks. I don't like iTunes but I've checked out all the music sites and don't see anything cheaper that's legit and worth a shit *shrug*

Very true. :)

And there is also XM Satellite radio. That's probably not legal either, but then . . . it cecomes sort of TIVO-like. :)

I don't mind doing illegal stuff... heck, i'll steal a car if i still had the contacts to unload it quickly.

I was just pointing out to the OP that allofmp3 may have looked legal, it's not.

Amazon's MP3 Store is looking nice.

I still prefer iTunes, though I wish they'd enrich the Plus selection a bit.

If you prefer, or are mainly in to, indie stuff, there are tons of alternatives. If you want mainstream stuff, not so much.

You can download for free and legally from the sites below. I compiled this list mostly by myself and some sites I haven't been to in several months so they may have changed or disappeared

Hey thanks for posting that list. I hadn't heard of many of these sites. Loving Magnatune's classical and world sections. I could waste pretty much the rest of my day in there, no problem.
