There are also small, local investment firms who may suit your needs better than a megacorp. I work for one who only charges a yearly fee of I believe $45, with no minimum starting amount.

I should point out, however, that funds in an IRA are still invested in some real fund, (of your choosing,) and there aren't many you can buy for only $500. If you can save up a bit more and open it later in the year, this will be much easier.
