Where Can I sell this?

GasX

Lifer
I have a bunch of reclaimed granite countertop I got from my mother in law to use for a kitchen renovation which never happened. Any suggestion where I can sell this other than maybe craig's list? Not sure it would even sell there...

Depends on how big it is and also how thick.

If big enough then someone might do a island with it. But by the time they got it and cut for a kitchen it might not be worth the risk.

So aim low price wise and hit craigslist.

Restore (Habitat for Humanity version of Goodwill) and then tax writeoff for the retail price?

Try Craigslist, but I wouldn't expect much. You could also contact a local countertop place to see if they would offer a low price for it. It's sizeable, they could salvage some bathroom countertops or some ledge pieces out of it.

I just sent an email out for yet another granite quote for our kitchen counter. Looking at $3000 for it. 🙁

I'd be very careful with this option. New tax laws for donations to charities are absurd now...Can't donate a car and claim more than $500 now where I live...

that's incorrect. you can claim FMV up to $500 without a sale. If you donate a vehicle and it is sold by Goodwill or whoever, you can use that amount as the FMV and deduct it when you do your taxes.

Thank you for the correction, was coming back here to change it...now it will forever be known I didn't know my tax codes...🙁

There are a lot of do-it-yourselfers out there. If the pieces are of a usable size, you shouldn't have much trouble selling it on craigslist. I had been keeping my eyes on craigslist for quite a while for just such a deal, and have noticed that except for some really ugly stuff, and excessively over-priced (and ugly too) stuff, a lot of the re-used kitchen stuff sells fast. When I purchased my cabinets (used), the sellers rapidly had a list of over a dozen people willing to pay what they were asking.

Sad face? Depends on the color, & grout color, but I've seen some granite countertops made with 1 foot square pieces of granite and 18" square pieces of granite that look better than solid granite. Cost is a fraction of a solid granite countertop.

Yes, sad face. While I can afford it, it's not like I enjoy spending $3000 on ~42 sq ft of granite though I will almost certainly enjoy the result. I also want to buy a new car and a new TV (the former is sensible, the latter a luxury) so the $3000 puts a crimp on those plans.

Basically, my desires far exceed my means, but I suspect that will always be the case barring a lottery win (which is nearly impossible since I very rarely play!). 🙂

Granite as low as $10 sq/ft. You install it yourself too to save even more.
