You can get really cheap Recoton (I think that's the name) cables that do the trick at your nearest best buy.....when I bought some for a girl I met first semester, they were 3.99......although, you might need an extender, depending on your setup. Mind you, these cables are cheap as hell and the sound quality is nowhere near good. if your receiver/system has toslink digital-in's, get a mini-to-toslink cable from tradertrax.com for $20, and you'll appreciate the difference, believe me. (tradertrax has some high/decent quality stuff, at very good prices)

That's the biggest load of crap in the market today.
All the coax digital and optical digital cables do is transmit digital &quot;1's&quot; and &quot;0's&quot;.
Any cable will do, as long as it transmits the signal.
*sigh*

I remeber a test done about a year ago, using a high end DVD player and a Theta ($4000) receiver.
Instead of a cheap cable and a good cable to compare, they used a COAT hanger and a good cable.
The good cable produced no dropped bits, neither did the coat hanger.
Therefore, use up your old coat hangers!!!

I take it back, he's right, coat-hangers are all we will ever need. (mind you, it has to be of the brown color, those work best)

nice...I am looking for a &quot;Y&quot; cable so I can plug my speakers and my mic into my soundblaster at the same time...know what I mean? I could make one, but too lazy..rather spend 4-5 dollars on a pre-fab.

I've pondered on the digital cable issue, and I think that there's a possibility that cables may have some effect. Now, I don't mean that spending loads of cash on a digital cable is justifiable, in fact probably any difference is far far far from anything we could ever discern. Given I haven't studied the systems enough to know for sure, so this is just my arm chair guess. So, chances are I'm wrong, but just humble me for a second here.

I don't know the nature of the signals, but let's just assume it's something like a square wave, or a pulse width modulated square wave of some sort. I think that the cable will have some infintesimally small effect on the signal. For lets say 0V is 0 and 5V is 1, the transition area between 5V and 0V can vary depending on the cable somewhat perhaps? I suppose if the digital receiver is taking the data at a set sampling rate then it wouldn't matter, i.e. if it just had to determine if it was a 1 or a 0 and the specific length didn't matter. Ah, well someone feel free to educate me as I am only a lowly mechanical engineer, and such mysteries of electronics are above me. heheh

Heh, well the last part was. I had a suitemate this year who's opinion was that a) all mechanical engineers aren't as smart as EE's and b) we don't do any work. So it was a slight bit sarcastic.
