Where can I obtain more of this truly ancient memory?

These are the markings on the modules:

HY5118164B JC-60

I did a google search and came up with USBid, a site whose minimum for an order is 500! This is for a friend who got this pc given to her from her last job. She just wants to use it for e-mail and such so it would be suitable for her if it wasn't so slow due to its 16MB of memory!

The only upgrade she can afford is memory, so does anyone know where I can get more of these antiquated sticks?

Can you supply us with as much as you know about the PC? Maybe it takes standard modules. At the age where they came with 16Mb of RAM, it is most likely using single inline memory modules, or SIMMs, which must be installed in pairs (on Pentium systems at least).

PentiumMMX systems might use SIMMs, or either EDO or SDRAM DIMMs. Do you see any model markings on the motherboard? Otherwise, give the length of one of the memory modules, that should reveal whether it's a SIMM or a DIMM due to its physical length.

WOW there is a ton of programs on that machine. I am supprised that any of them will run very good with so little space left on the HD for a swap file.
What brand is the computer? It probably takes SIMMS, how many pins on the memory and how many chips are on the memory card. I have a bunch of simms that I will part with for just the shipping if they are what you need. How many memory slots are on the motherboard? If this is a Packard Bell machine they just used standard SIMMS and usually had 3 slots with 8 megs soldered on the motherboard. Computer surplus outlet in Vegas has a lot of old memory cheap if you hunt up there website.

I had actually brought over some old PC-100 sticks I had on the chance they would work, but the memory in the PC is only about 3/4 the size of PC-100 SDRAM, app. 1/4 shorter in length. I hope that clears things up a little...

Sounds like SIMMs, all right. I suggest taking up Bleep on his generous offer :)

According to Google, the "HY5118164B" is an EDO DRAM chip. And from what you said above (check out some photos, just to be sure), it looks like you're looking for a pair of 60ns (or better) EDO SIMMs. The modules don't have to have the same exact memory chips, though.

becuse you said an old stick of pc100 is too big, I'm sure that it more than likely a 72 pin simm (30 pinners were phased out by that time)

EDIT: WTH? I didn't choose to post yet

The board may or may not require you to install in pairs, If I remember right last generation boards would allow you to install a single simm.

You could try FS/T someone may have some old edo kicking around.

The number '60' on the memory tells me its probably EDO memory since FPM is usually 70ns speed and EDO is 60ns. They are SIMMS so they have to be installed in pairs.

It's likely Hynix (or Hyundai) double sided EDO...Maybe 2 SIMMS of 8 MB each?

We really need to know what motherboard it is. That will tell all. See if you can find a model number or an FCC number on the motherboard. Not only will you find out the ram it can use but just how much it can take. How many empty memory slots did you say it had?

A computer of that vintage would definitely be using EDO dimms. EBay is your best choice to get old ram like that.

I had a buddy with an old PC need some SIMMS. Someone in the FS/FT forum attempted to sell his old sticks, but that didn't go so well. I agreed to buy them, but the trader in question removed his listing and offered to ship them to me for the cost of shipping. It worked out great and lasted my buddy til the end of the semester (and more cash earning opportunity).

I got some good, cheap, old outdated RAM on eBay for two of my ancient comps during htis past year.
eBay is full of people selling RAM they dont need for cheap.

Get the specs, such as this: "72-pin SIMM 64" and plug it into the eBay search box.

I have a 8-10 sticks of 72 pin SIMM laying about, mostly 8mb sticks. you can have it all for 5$+cost of shipping which should be less than 10$ total :)
