My girlfriend's birthday is coming up, where can I go to buy a dog?

What do they run for?

And finally, we live together but she works and I go to school full time and work. Can the dog stay home by itself or do I have to take it to a dog-sitter or something?

By the sound of it, you both have too much to deal with already. Don't bring an animal into a situation where it can't be properly taken care of.
 
Depending on the dog it could stay at home for a decent period of time during the day by itself? But not for days. I'm pretty sure a quick google search will set you up with some places that sell dogs, otherwise check the newspaper classifieds, or goto a pet store?

Dogs would be like kids. Cats like being alone.
 
Dude. I can tell already that you have no clue! Taking care of a dog is like taking care of an infant if done properly. Are you ready to do that?

Does she even want a dog?

If a dog is properly trained, it can go around 6-8 hours inside before needing to go outside to do its business.

Or are you planning to be the trailor-trash-type of person who buys a puppy for the cuteness, hoping your GF will be so happy that you'll get a good lay, and then the next day, after the magic has worn off, you'll cast the poor animal to the streets to be run over by a car or where it will breed like mad, or do you just plan on chaining it up outside to bark all day instead of giving it the TLC it wants and needs?

Can I have your number, I think I need to give it to PETA!

Thanks. Damn, I didn't think it'd be such an issue seeing that there are so many other New Yorkers out there with dogs. I don't know how they do it.

Dogs need training, dogs need to be walked more then once a day, dogs need fresh food & water, & they need companionship.

Yes for the first 2-3 months I would say its very bad to leave them alone for 8 hours a day. Now my puppy is 5 months and she is alone 6 hours a day but thats it. My gf wanted one and although she loves her it is much more work than she thought.

Agreed. This animal shelter almost didn't let my parents adopt a dog for me for Christmas, because people usually do and then try to return it when things aren't working out. Thank God they didn't give up...this dog is amazing.

The Turkey has no match. It knows of your mounting plans. A whole kennel couldn't shake it's resolve.

I better have next years order ready & waiting when I come looking.
