sandblasting seems like the best solution so far. the calligraphy that i plan on getting is very complex, so i don't think any electric engravers will work, at least not for me. i am not worried about cost. i plan on handing this down to my grandkids and beyond. it will be my legacy.

Laser etching doesn't work very well on swords or any shiny metal.

Any Nd Yag (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet; Nd:Y3Al5O12) Laser would do this wonderfully; Shiny has nothing to do with it. Any shop that has a laser worth 2 cents should be able to do this.

I work on these lasers daily. Welding, Cutting and Etching.

For elaborate designs a laser is the way to go. Sandblasting Sucks, and will not be very defined around the edges. Look into getting it done with a Laser, trust me you will be Much Happier with the results. Get a sandblasted sample and get the same done with a laser and compare the results. This is something that you do not want to take a chance with. Once it is done it cannot be undone.

As I said, industrial lasers can be found but, aren't easy to find. Most trophy shops use argon based lasers <40 watts. Sand blasting does NOT suck and fine detail can be done. Perhaps, you could laser his sword for him if you think you could do the job?
Here's an example of sandblasting a knife.

MagnusTheBrewer,

You have your opinion and I have mine... I still think for a fine sword that is to be passed down through the generations deserve the best treatment and sandblasting while adequate does not beat a laser by any stretch of the imagination.

As I stated in my earlier post get a sample from both a laser and sandblasting and compare them for what suits quality and cost. It is the Only Smart way to do it, anything else is foolish. You cannot get it Undone if they screw it up. Nothing to argue about there.

Perhaps, you could laser his sword for him if you think you could do the job?

Trying to put me in a spot here?

I never claimed to be a Laser Artist, just an electronics tech working with them daily. I know what I see day to day and the laser etching I see at work beats the crap out of any sandblasting job I have ever seen. Ever.

What mall did you buy this at?

I have a hand forged katana, and the last thing I would do to a valuable sword is mark it up.

SandEagle, any pics of the sword?

I'm getting interested in swords, particularly those of Damascus steel.

Now getting the thread started since Sandeagle won't take initiative.

This is my favorite sword that I have in my collection. Standard asian-orient style steel tanto blade. Length is 66cm from tip to hilt, weights about 1.13kg (2.5 lbs)
Friend got it from a sword/knife convention back in 2002 and gave it as a gift.

This one has some history because one nice evening in 2003, I somehow believed my blade finesse was tantamount to that of Jet Li and other masters of the art. So a couple of roundhouse kicks and flips, a few more swings in the air or so later I felt a thunk against my pinky. Whazzat?
Pinky wasn't feeling so good :(. Lots of purply blood that day from a deep cut/wound, learned my lesson.

Call some of your local jewelry stores. They have a tone of experience with engraving and may be able to suggest someone if they cannot do it.
