are there any forums specifically where people only talk about win xp? i want to know to see if anyone else has been having my problem. here goes, i've tried installing xp on my system several times, and each time, it won't let me connect using the built in pppoe stuff. when i try to set it up, it doesn't give me the option to select broadband with password and login, only the LAN one. i've tried several different network cards, and all don't seem to work. i'm guessing its recognizing the NIC as a network by itself, but then again i don't know. anyone know what might be wrong? o yeah i would like to mention i have pac bell dsl and with win98, i used enternet to connect. this is my only computer, and i don't have a network.

Can you elaborate on what steps you've taken to try to setup XP's default pppoe? Setting up pppoe in XP should establish a connection icon in network properties and give you all the options for login name, password & etc. once clicked (I have successfully established it in XP). Personally, I favor raspppoe as it's faster and lighter than XP's default pppoe.

If you have problems with Windows XP, you are in the right forum. However, since your problem has to do with a networking issue, I think you would be better off posting in the networking section. There are a lot of guys there that might be able to help you out with your problem. However, if you have other problems with Windows XP, such as drivers issues, etc...come and post here, and the guys on this forum will shower you with their knowledge 😉 Hope this helps.

EDIT: You might also want to check this page out. It's PacBell's Windows XP Drivers and FAQ

Good luck.

I have the exact same situation as you. I have Pacific Bell DSL, only one computer, using Windows 98/2000 in the past. (BTW, for future reference, if you ever go back to Win2K/98, use RASPPPoE from here...it works great! http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/ )

Anyways, here goes:
Start Menu > Connect To > Show all connections > New Connection Wizard > Connect To Internet > Set Up My Connection Manually > Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password > ISP Name - (whatever...Pacbell DSL) > Type in your info, then click next

Post back, m'kay? 🙂

ok, there lies the problem. when i choose new connection wizard, connect to internet, set up my connection manually, i don't have the option to connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password, its like grayed out, so i can't select it. the only one i can select is the one below it, which is something like connect directly to internet or something. i don't know why it won't let me choose 🙁 anyone have any ideas? my nic is properly installed and everything.

That's really weird. I don't want to suggest anything rash, like a format or something. Perhaps a Repair with the WinXP CD or something. Hopefully Psychoholic or someone will come up. Until then, try Windows Help since it's more helpful than before.

Sorry...😱

darn, haven't been able to fix the problem, on the bright side, thx bt for the tip on raspppoe, works great. anyone else?
