When I was young, I used to get build your own radio kits and RC cars etc. They required some soldering and etc.. anyone know what I am talking about?

Recently, I felt like I just want to build something for fun and I don't have time/energy to build from scratch so some kits would be nice.

It's a damn shame Heathkit is no more. My father's first PC was a Heathkit, years before the first IBM.

Radio Shack. My parents got me a kit like that for Christmas several years ago. It was a voice changer... very fun to build.

Check out Sparkfun. They don't really have kits but they have a lot of cool electronic gadgets like gps evaluation boards, sensors, and microcontrollers. The Arduino microcontroller is only $32 and uses open source software to program with and it uses usb. I bought one recently along with the accelerometer thats used in the Wiimote to play around with. Its pretty easy as far as microcontrollers go and they have good documentation online to show you how to make simple beginners projects.

www.you-do-it.com

It's a big electronics (parts) store in Needham, Massachussets. They carry many lines of electronics kits. Good for seeing what's available, at least. It's a fun store to visit, if you're in the area.

They don't seem very interested in "mail-order" - no on-line ordering, phone and fax orders only, $10 minimum shipping charge, US addresses only.

When Heathkit was in its prime you could buy kits for almost anything including Thomas Theater organs. I still have a working GR-64 shortwave radio I built as a kid.

Yep, we went through a LOT of those kits. My father was an EE who worked for TRW.

Most were done with my older brothers, though. By the time I was really old enough to do one on my own, Heathkit was in serious decline... and I was a dopehead.

Pff... get another R/C!

I just bought a XXXCR and I'm thinking about an XB8.

I hate that store. they are expensive and the parts they carry have the weirdest cross refrence codes.
