where can I get aquarium tanks for cheap?

i would like a 55 gallon one, and would like to spend < $100 (just for the tank - i'll pay more for filter and stuff).

pet stores are really up in the prices. I think walmart has them for sale, but i don't know about the prices there, you might want to go check it out

Newspapers and garage sales are the two best places to get cheap aquariums. Beyond that, try a local reptile or fish store. Sometimes you'll get lucky and find a place that buys/sells used tanks. In those cases, you can expect to pay anywhere from $1 to $1.50 a gallon for a tank that holds water. If you buy used, make sure they will give you a warrentee on the tank. Take it home, fill it with water, and watch for leaks for a week or two.

just called walmart - they have a 55 gallon with hood and a smallish power filter for $150... good deal?

Well, considering I paid $40 for my first 55 gallon, I don't know what to tell you. The one at WalMart is new, includes a hood and a filter. How much more gear will you need? What do you plan on keeping?

i probably don't need much else - i''ll mostly keep "easy" fish - platies, tetras, etc... and some plants.

Fish are soothing to look at. You'd better give them cool British sounding names though, like "Cornelius" or "Alistair."

Try your local yellow pages. Look for pet/fish stores that are local (not chains like Petco and PetSmart). Call them up and ask them if they sell used aquariums. If they don't, ask them for names of places that do.

You can buy a 55 gallon at Petsmart for 99.00. Sometimes they have them for sale for even 89.00.
