Never waxed my car by myself, and don't want to do it. I have a black 2010 sedan, with only 13K mi on it-so its pretty new. I've looked at one or two places in Boston Ma, and not sure if the prices are decent. But my BullSh!it radar is going off a bit.

From one place, the ultimate wax for $149:
Step One is the application of a liquid compound that removes minor surface scratches and light oxidation (faded paint). Step Two is the application of the highest quality Brazilian Carnauba wax. In Step Three acrylic glazing is applied. The result is a miracle finish that has the highest gloss and longest lasting paint protection. Protects your car for approximately 9-12 months.

Then there are a few options in between with the cheapest option at same place is $59:
ONE STEP WAX Application of the highest quality Brazilian Carnauba creme wax. Provides solid protection and leaves a high gloss shine. Recommended for newer vehicles.
Protects your car for approximately 3 months.

Are these rip off prices? Can you guys suggest a place in the city that you've had good results?

I wouldn't use either of those places, but I can't offer anything better. check out the northeast forum at autopia.org. Might be able to at least get a hobbyist to do a much better job for a good price.

The prices are high for the offered services, but not that far out of line considering an excellent paint detail can cost $800-1500, depending on the vehicle. There are a few red flags with their advertisements, which is why I wouldn't use them specifically. A carnuba wax should typically only be used as the final step in a paint detail, that they claim to use it before an acrylic glaze is a warning. (here's a quick overview of why http://paintcarendetailing.com/wax.html

The second option you posted would literally take $3 in quarters, a $3 bottle of wax from walmart, a clean $2 towel, and 30 minutes of your time at a do-it-yourself car wash. If that's worth $60 to you, then go for it. Seems like you could find something equivalent for $30-45, but I don't know boston.

I've tried many many different products in the past and my favorite is the 3M Professional Series for wax/swirl/glaze and Lexol blue bottle for the dash. Have not waxed the car in well over a year and it still looks fantastic.

$159? LOL $49? LOL.

Get a decent bottle of wax, buy waxing gear, and hand wax it yourself beautifully. Total cost $15-20.

You're paying premium for their profit and labor.

if you really don't want to do it yourself, you're going to pay over $100 for an exterior detail of at least decent quality. i spent about twice that, including a new random orbital buffer and pads, shampoo, touch-up pen, clay bars, wax and several small tools like foam brushes, and i'm all set for the foreseeable future.

I did a $325 polish and hand wax on this car a couple of weeks ago, sorry for the crappy pictures, my phone doesn't do it justice.

You are in Boston, that's MA not CA.

We do not wax our cars, we barely wash our cars... maybe at the end of the winter we'll hit a basic drive thru carwash to get the road salt off.
