Tomoe is a perennial favorite, and deserving of its praise. Sushi of Gari (original UES location) is still my favorite for special occasions, it's hard to beat his creative omakase.

As topic says, where's the best sushi in NYC? In Manhattan only... thanks

tomoe sushi on thompson street. I thoroughly enjoyed it when i went.

i might just go there. Does that place offer take out?

Yep, they have take out but you should eat there. For take out, call ahead to pick up your order.

Remember, there are MANY knock offs - tomo is not Tomoe, and there is only one REAL Tomoe (on thompson street).

There are tons of good places, but you can try Sushi World.

Lol, "Sushi World"? That's the worst name i've ever heard for a sushi restaurant :D

I should point out that "Minado" (located on 32nd St in NYC) no longer exists. They are not even listed on Minado's website. It is now called "Todai" (http://www.todai.com). I've never tried them since they took on the new name. Even though I love sushi, I'm certainly no expert. But even I can tell Minado was decent, but not great.

I've also heard Nobu was more of a cooked Japanese food place with less focus on sushi. It's to pricey for me, so I've never been there.

I have to try this Tomoe place now. As for me, I like good, affordable sushi. I tend to like a place called Sushi Time (~43rd/3rd Ave), Aoki (~48th/8th) for their unique dishes, the Korean/Japanese place across the street from Todai and another Korean/Japanese place near NYU across the street from Senor Swanky. In Brooklyn, I like a place called Dish. And I like the sushi at Ice Sushi in Brooklyn, but their service is so bad that it might negate the food.

Lolz... minado's and todai's = umustbefvckinkidding me for sushi places... sushi rice at all u can eat places are usually hard, the fish they cut extremely thin, and u can imagine the sushi lacks the fresh taste...

If u want to go cheap on sushi look up "Kaitenzushi (Kaitensushi?) East" or just "East Restaurant" ... sushi goes around on a conveyor belt... they also make sushi to order.. very inexpensive and fun environment.. sushi is above average but not the best. They have awesome raw oysters there tho.

Tomoe is pretty decent. There are a few other places that we frequented... kinda around Hunter College area on Lexington more uptown.

For no hold barred and no budget limitations, you go to Masa

But don't expect to get out of there for under $400-$500 a person with drinks. Oh, and you don't actually order anything, I believe. The chef servers you what he considers the best sushi available that day, so it will change by season.

Tomoe is generally considered among the very top tier in NYC but is verrrrry well priced for its quality which is why it's legendary.

Expect long lines (1 hour plus) if you don't get there by the time the doors open up.

They only take AMEX or cash.

1st ave and 11th st (my favorite, but somehow the name escapes me!)
Taisho on St. Marks St. by 3rd ave (not sushi, but great food)
Tomoe on houston and thompson st. (got too expensive the past few years, and long lines)

Nobu, or nobu next door, if you have the $$$

I went there once. It is on the expensive side, but I thought the food was nothing special.

Sasabune has excellent omakase. I've read lots of good things about Sushi Yasuda, but I've never been.
