The vibration of the strings is transferred through the bridge to the soundboard (top). As the soundboard vibrates, it creates waves inside the body of the instrument. The waves are then forced through the f-holes or soundhole. The types of wood or materials used, the various thicknesses of the carved top, the internal bracing patterns, shape of the body, position of the bridge, neck and fretboard, overall construction and design, type of finish and even how the instrument is played will all influence the tonal properties of the instrument.

Hmmm, I did my Master's Thesis on the first movement of Ligeti's Cello Concerto. I used a spectrographic viewpoint, got about 20 or so FFt's of various points, including the entire movement. Please be more specific about what you want, and I may be able to help.
