Where can I find some hard drive diagnostic software that run from A:?

I need to test my hard drive for some potential writing/reading problems. I have been told that windows chkdsk is not any good for this purpose.

Therefore wonder where I can find some general testing software that can be used on most hard drives non only a specific brandare. Preferably it should also be some kind of freeware.

The software should also be able to run from a floppy disk or bootable CD/DVD.

Any ideas?

If your partition is formatted ntfs, a dos one won't help. I would backup first and goto your hdd's support site and download their software..

What is A: ? 🙂

Seriously though, I doubt you'll find a freeware tool that is well suited for complete drive diags on *all* drives. If you have to, get a couple *cough* floppies and download the diag stuff from maxtor, seagate, wd those seem to be the big 3.
