Was going to go buy the Sony DRU-700A this weekend from Best Buy since its on sale, and read the review in Maximum Pc. It said in the article that media was scare for dual layer. Anyone know where I can find blank DL DVD's? Or are most movies going to be able to fit on a blank DVD-R?

Thanks

DL dvd's arent out yet, and yes, movies will fit on a blank dvd-r. note that dvd's used to be blank, meaning that as long as a movie is on a dvd, then it will fit on a blank dvd.

So should I even get this bruner, or get a cheaper single layer burner?

I did find on newegg.com some Verbatim DL dvd's. $15 a piece.

I haven't seen a post more wrong, outside of the Off Topic forum, for a long time.

Burnable DL dvd's are out, just very expensive.
DVD Movies you buy in the store are not made on the same kind of disks you buy then record on, it's a totally different technology.
Many Movie DVD's have come on dual-layer disks for years, and since dual-layer burnable DVD's have only just come out, there were many Movies that would not fit on one disk. That is one of the reasons people are so excited about the new DL drives, finally you WILL be able to copy any store-bought DVD on to a single burnable DVD.

My advice is if you are buying a DVD burner, buy a DL capable one. Some day the discs will be affordable and you will be ready. People around here seem to recommend the NEC ND-2510A one from Newegg.

I'm new to burning DVD's. I know the Sony comes with a lot of software. What do you use for the NEC, and how much is it going to cost?

Buy the NEC from newegg that comes with software for like 3 extra bucks. It is Roxio Software and I think it is very easy to use. NEC is a good burner...DO IT!!! Also, you will need to d/l DVD Shrink off the internet to copy movies.

Where have you been chum? Just bought the LG 4120BB Multidrive for £53 (Ebuyer.co.uk)(can convert to US $ if you like) and it eats NEC's for breakfast plus writes to ALL and I mean ALL DVD media. Gotta agree tho, DL DVD media over the top price wise!!

You are correct DanDeighan, store bought dvd's are pressed not burned & they are also encrypted so nero just cant do a dvd to dvd copy.

You have to decrypt it to hd then burn it. :)

I suggest the new Pioneer dual layer burner it's 16X dvd & 4X DL dvd. :)

Well, movies are DVD9, but converting to DVD5 will fit on a single layer DVDR just fine.

It is not fair to compare OEM with retail box price. The Sony OEM dual layer with software is only $84.

Sony OEM with software at Newegg

For less than $10 difference, the drive quality, not price should decide the purchase.

True but he was buying the retail version, the NEC is only $4 cheaper now but still an excellent burner. The Sony is a rebadged LiteON I would guess from the fact that it has Smart Burn.
