Where can I find an *UPDATED* WiFi router FAQ, and issue with home WiFi range

So this is a 2-fer type of question here

1. Where can I find an updated WiFi router FAQ, one that addresses the differences between N900 and AC1750 and 802.11ac? AAlso one that explains in non-geekenese what the differences between an access point, a router, and such are

2. I need some help trying to extend the range (or the consistency) of my DIR-825 plugged into my comcast cable modem. I have a large house and my study is upstairs, across the house, through many walls. The router isn't moving, and neither can I. I have strong signal sometimes, and then it will randomly drop and I have to go unplug the router to get reconnected to the internet. I assume it's a range issue or a signal strength issue, and I'm torn as to what I should do. The thing is, I get full bars on my laptop and it reads "connected" with full green bars.

The router is old, several years old, got it when the DIR-825 first came out. Perhaps it's time to just get a new router? If so, I'd like to get one with the best range possible. If I have to spend a few extra bucks to do so, then I can do that.

I've also seen some of those "high gain antennas". Should I try one of those places and pick up a few high gain antennas?

Any help greatly appreciated
