Unfortunatley, there's not much that's going to make him happy right now.

He just needs time to let this sink and and comes to terms with it. He might also try talking to the teacher and explaining what happened. Maybe he can ask for some extra credit?

Just be there for him right now, and listen if he needs to talk.

Well, regardless of when they went to bed, he probably would've over slept. It sounds like it's totally the mom's fault and she should probably talk to the teacher. As for you, just be there for him. Try to get his mind off of it. Go hang out or something.

Man that's rough... and there's NO chance to give the presentation even at a reduced mark? Anyways, don't console your friend, i would try to be more active and talk to his teacher... or get the mom to talk to the teacher, or the school counselor. Talk to anybody in higher authority than the teacher ASAP, bring your work to show it to them, and tell them how unfair that is... hell, even if you only get 75% or even 50% of what the mark is it's better than a zero.

Geez, put it in perspective. This grade won't affect his college admission, right? In a year from now, he doesn't have an acute problem, he has an anecdote.

If that's the case, have his mother write a note saying that she did that on accident and not to take it out on her son.

I suggest that you go up to the teacher as a group and calmly explain the situation to the teacher. There is no reason whatsoever that the teacher should be able to give the student a 0 for being absent. If you are calm and composed, the teacher will react the same and be reasonable. If for some reason the teacher is not reasonable, go to a guidance counselor or other higher authority and bring all your work for proof and explain the situation. The teacher should allow you to present your project again when your entire group is there. I know that for any of my high school teachers, if a group member is not present on the day of the presentation, the teacher delays the presentation till the next day or whenever the absent student has returned. Good luck...

If this was a college class then he's pretty much screwed. I know most of my college profs would not be so forgiving if I didn't show up for a presentation. If this is highschool then who cares, at least he got to sleep and miss some boring presentation. He should still beg the teacher for some credit. Maybe he can make it up some how or show what he contributed to the project.
