Yeah, I was new to Linux a while ago, so I got Mandrake, it's been great, since I'm still learning. Go with Mandrake, it's a good distro.

mandrake is based on red hat but now offered as a separate distro.

mandrake configured every piece of hardware in my machine without a hitch...
the other ones didn't

mandrake didn't screw up my boot record, the others (redhat, corel) did...

kde is pretty ncie...i prefer it over gnome...

i'd go mandrake 8.0...best distro IMO (for previous full-time windoze users)

I can burn it onto 2 CD-Rs for 20 cents plus shipping for you. Not free, but pretty cheap. :)

What kind of internet connection do you have?

You can also get open source linux distributions (and loads of other stuff) from www.cheapbytes.com. I go there when it will take too long to download. Order online, and it's at your door in a couple of days.

Although, if you're new to linux, go get a boxed distrib of red hat or makdrake (mandrake pretty's friendly) for $30ish. They have nice books telling you what the heck is going on.
