I'll second memtest86, it's the best you can get outside dedicated hardware.
And as nothingman said, any memtester that runs under a seperate OS isn't going to tell you much.
Just found this neat comparison of various memory testing utilities here. For free or shareware it say's that Memtest 86 and Gold Memory are the best. Read it.
