Where can I cash a Canada Post money order without getting hit with fees?

My bank wants $12.00 to cash the money order. The guy who sent it to me says I can cash it at any US post office. Is this true?

It should say "US Funds" or some other such thing. I'd change banks if I was you, that $12 charge is ridiculous.

I agree, your bank is really lame and frankly screams "We hate customers". I would change it immediately. I've never heard one that imposes a service fee on a CanadaPost MO.

Last time I used an MO I paid $145US (it said 145 US on the MO) and I paid ~198CDN with like $3 fee. I don't think there should be ay fee for cashing it.

Should be free to cash it. I've bought lots of stuff on eBay with Canada Post MO's. It should say "US" next to the dollar amount. No one I've dealt with has ever had any problems cashing them.

Where do you cash yours?

is it pink?

the international or US ones are pink. should be no fee. If the person that sent it fvcked up, it might be a domestic money order (ie. for use within canada). I forget what color the domestic ones are.. green for USPS, i forget for canada, because. i dont know. might still be pink come to think of it. heh

Once i had a USPS money order sent to me.. but it was a domestic one, not an international.. so the PO wouldnt cash it, and the bank charged me.. a few bucks. something like $3.

Wow. Some of these fees are unreal. I've never been hit for cashing a postal money order before, either CDN$ or US$.

Yes its pink-it says US $240.00 on it.

I have no problem cashing domestic MOs at my credit union, but they were giving me a hard time with this one. They said a $12.00 fee + they werent sure of the exchange rates so it could be less than what the mo says. i pointed out that it said US $240.00, but they said they werent sure & they had to check. Personally, I think they are all idiots & have no clue on what to do. Monday Ill try the post office-others said they have cashed Canada Post MOs there-so ill try that.

Yep, I use Canadian MO's all the time, and it looks like you got an International MO so you're all fine and should be able to cash it without any charges. The sender pays the $3.00 or so charge to issue the MO and pays the corresponding amount corresponding to the exchange rate at the time.

But I agree that credit union is ridiculous.

if it says $240USD then there is no reason to worry about the exchange rate.. its a flat USD check. Your bank is being moronic. I send money orders all the time to the states to my mom and shes never had a problem.
