The only fiddling or tweaking I had was with the crappy ATI drivers for the e-home wonder cards. They don't work for crap when installed with an hdtv wonder. I was constantly having to reinstall the e-home drivers and reboot when MCE "lost" the cards. Switched to the Hauppage cards and haven't had a single problem since.

I have 1 e-home wonder in my MCE box at work with no hdtv card and it works flawlessly.

im worried more about the dvd decoder plugin junk

Get a Harmony (you still have to buy the MS remote for the IR receiver/blaster though)
