I had an action pack subscription... could have sworn it was in there... my subscription ended awhile back though. i didnt see it on amazon either... can you even buy it seperately from an actual pc? I want to use it with a hauppage pvr150/250 or 500 (dual tuners...)

or is there better software for pvr functions? I could care less about fm or anything but pvr and IE

from what I understand, you can only buy a PC with it installed.

edit: looks like i'm wrong. I thought you could only get it pre-installed...

Not sure where you can purchase it thru retail, but I got a copy through my MSDN subscription...

No, you can get it there if you an OEM (which you just have to walk through a few hoops to be)

or you can also find it here.

Thats a killer deal with the bundled remote.

I think thats the only way yo ucan get it. You can't buy the "software," but you can buy a media center bundle that has the software and remote.

I just use ati's all-in-wonder remote.

There are lots of options, MediaPortal, MythTV, BeyondTV/Media, Meedio, etc. Personally, I've tried Beyond and Meedio other than MCE. I like MCE the best, it requires more tweaking and some plugins to get some of the features (weather, DVD management), but overall I think it's the most polished and gf/wife friendly of all the PC based HTPC software once set up right. It defintely has some drawbacks I have learned to live with but the convenience of having all my media in one central system (and one remote with my Logitech Harmony) is well worth it. My main problem is I get bored and start fiddling with it and break stuff. ;) So I only have myself to blame for the majority of the problems we've had with out MCE system.

MS is going to be pretty much the only way to go IMO when Vista comes out with the level of DRM content producers want for premium HD content. MS has already secured CableCARD support for Windows...MediaCenter in Vista is going to rock..I just hope they iron out the kinks with the Beta UI, some of it is pretty janky.

You are correct in that it has to be purchased with a piece of hardware as is all Windows OEM software. Technicaly you still need to purchase it with a NON-MS hardware item.

The deal is that the remote is usually $35-40 on its own and MCE is $129. $139 for both is not bad at all.

If you get the the latest version of Nero, it has a feature called Nero Home, it works great, and detects more tv capture cards then MCE ever would. Also is alot more customizable :)

I want something that can be setup and used with no fiddling/tweaking afterwards... i dont want to have to install updates and fix driver issues once a week before i can watch tv

I can't think of a single reason to get MCE. Proprietary software works just as well, and you can record in universal formats. MCE can't create AVIs, MPEGs, etc etc.

I dont need anything to create avi's or mpeg's. I want to record a show, then play it back at a later time

You can do plenty with the files that MCE creates. There are plenty of prgrams that will strip the extra data off the dvr-ms files and leave a perfectly usable mpg file.

No driver updating or fiddling/tweaking required. My 3 and 5 year olds can use Windows Media center without problems.

Come on, you can't say you didn't have to tweak and troubleshoot your MCE box (if you built it yourself) a bunch before it worked optimally...either that or you aren't as anal as I am. ;)

Like I said, I love my MCE box and it's stable and easy to use, usually any problems are created by me fiddling around.

You really don't know anything about MCE, please stop crapping in every thread vaguely related to it. DVR-MS is just MPEG2 with a DRM wrapper and takes all of 10 seconds to strip using the appropriate graph.
