Thanks. Now that I'm at the site, which type of speakers will run off the speaker output from a PC sound card? I don't know speakers and I'm looking for very cheap.

Nevermind, they have an 800 number.

Most sound cards in PC's (or integrated sound), no longer have power amps on them, so all the output is at line level. This means you'll need amplified speakers or a separate stereo audio power amp (there are low wattage amp kits out there if you're really stuck on DIY) to get any useful sound level. Easiest to just get a set of computer speakers and integrate them as they are into your project.

Another option is to find a sound card with a power amp on it. But even then, the power will be under 5W per channel (more likely under 1W), so the speakers you could drive with it wouldn't be very high quality.

Thanks, Zepper,

That's what the folks at partsexpress.com said. I must say, I'm a little disappointed.
I envisioned an oak case with built in LCD, mobo, and speakers so the whole thing is self contained like a kiosk. I want to build something that is tough enough for the kids and their inevitable abuse.

Thanks for the links. I'm a big fan of newegg as well. In fact, just last night in the wee hours I ordered some cool stuff.

I went looking and found these stereo amps: 80-900 and 80-088
( http://www.minute-man.com/acat...nd_Amplifier_Kits.html ) which can be powered by 12V from the PC's PSU. Perhaps it won't work so well on switching PSU power, so be prepared to use a separate linear 12V wall wart if necessary. You could use a pair of automotive speakers off it. Some of those speakers come in a back can type enclosure to mount right into various panels. Make life easier and maybe this gave you some more ideas if you really want DIY.
