where can I buy sand?

planning to building a 4' x 6' x 6-10" sandpit for my son, what is the best place to buy some fraggin sand from and how much will it cost?

Local quarry or gravel yard. Some hardware stores. Lots of places.

Note that sand comes in different grades. Since your kid will be playing in it, make sure you get decent stuff.

so I have to pick it up? inst there a place where they would sell them in 40 50 lb or whatever bags? I don't even have a truck...

Lowes or home depot should have it. Maybe even walmart. You're looking for play sand. Make sure you get sand made for playing in as anything else will be extremely dusty.
 
Don't forget to pick up a nice BB gun for shooting neighborhood cats when they stop by to shit in your son's new play area. Otherwise, get used to explaining to your son why some of the darker sand stinks.
