Anybody know of a place that I'd be likely to locally find a straight razor? Not looking for a collector item, I just want an inexpensive razor to shave with. Lots of places to order online, but I like to see things like this in a store, plus no delivery time.

Nothing like the shave of a straight razor. There's still an old barber in my hometown that uses one. I go in every once in a while just for a shave. Ahhh the hot lather, the closeness of the shave....it can't be beat...usually don't have to shave for a couple of days after having that done. Of course it can be a bit unnerving when you realize the barber was a medic in WWII and is older than dirt. Still has steady hands though....

I bet you could find a rust antique one that would work great on ebay.

However, I bet you could find one in a remington store.l

I know that my barber sells them for cheap I think like $5 dollars. If your barber uses them maybe you can ask him.

I doubt I'll slit my throat. (Unless I miss a few doses.)

I don't mind safety razor shaves, the Mach3 I use is perfectly fine for it. But it's hard to shape a beard and really get a nice shave with one (even with my glasses on), so I want to see what I can do with a straight razor. I certainly can't use an electric, they kill me. But I of course don't want to spend 50, 60, 100 dollars on a razor.

I don't know specifically any barbers that use straight razors. Heck, I don't even know any real barbers around here, that will give you a shave. I guess I'll go have a look around and see. Hard to believe they'd sell one for 5 dollars if I can't find one online for less than 40. Of course, I also need to get a leather strop for it.

"even with my glasses on"....

I hope you don't try to shave with a straight razor without glasses on...

I thought most barbers weren't using them anymore due to health concerns (swapping blood with others, etc.).

Won't be a problem shaving without my glasses. It's just hard to see the exact shape of my beard without them, not a problem seeing where my neck is. :) The straight razor will be easier to shape the beard I expect because it's a single blade, which I can see the exact location of without all sorts of plastic and "lubrication strips" in the way.

You can find them at beauty supply stores. The inexpensive ones (5-10 bucks) have a slot for the disposable blades you'll have to use. A box of blades runs about 3 bucks and they usually have 5 blades in them. Changing the blades is the trickiest part of the whole operation. Be very carefull or you will slice your fingers pretty good. You'll get the hang of it. you can practically dry-shave with a new blade, but don't apply to much pressure, 'straight' razor burn hurts like hell.

That's actually not true for me, I can shape just fine with a safety razor (gillette sensor excel or whatever they are called). I have a very interesting beard/sideburns/goatee going on. One stripe that follows my jaw line, but as it comes down my jaw line it splits it high sideburns which connect to hair on my upper lip, which comes down the sides of my mouth to connect to my goatee which is longer. Anyway, I could post pics but dont' know where to post them.
