Where can i buy a PSU for extremely cheap?

My sister has an old PC with a dead PSU. The problem is, stores like frys and a lot of other places i have been only have higher powered, more expensive units. I understand the shift to more power, really, but it sucks when you are in my situation.

Anyone know where to get a really cheap PSU? Online or off.

Try a quick search of Newegg or any other site for that matter. Older 350W to 400W PSUs can be found for a decnet price. For about $25 to $50 you can get a decent one.

I'll throw this one out there but since you didn't list the system specs i'm assuming its a much older and low power system so here is a unit for less then $40 before shipping.

I wouldn't buy either of those. Newegg reviews are rarely to be trusted, but if multiple people report the same problem that is not likely due to user error, I would avoid the unit.

For example, with the Rosewill a lot of people have complained about the fan not shutting down even when you turn the computer off. Since they're complaining about it, I'm guessing the fan is reasonably noisy.

I would never buy a 480W power supply that retails for $20. That's asking for trouble, even on a light system. The unit may not actually be able to put out even half of what it's rated for.

For $40 with free shipping, this would probably be my choice:

Seriously, if you only spend $15-20 on a power supply, especially one that claims to put out almost 500W, you're asking for the unit to go out in a blaze of glory.

I would recommend you grab the Antec Earthwatts 380 DSF linked to in his reply. It is a solid PSU and is 80 Plus certified. I have used them in many of my builds and have never had an issue. They run nice and cool and are very quiet.

I would be a little suspicious of a PSU that costs $20. Especially if it is rated at 400+ watts. I got a Raidmax PSU (came with a computer case) and it was very light and very loud. I will never buy Raidmax hardware again.

A PSU is an important component in any computer system. If you cheap-out and get a crummy PSU, you might have problems with the system.

Just my opinion, based on my experience.

Check your yellow pages for local computer stores. have them rip a 220w PSU out of an old Compaq or something. You can probably get it for $10-15.

there's plenty of people in this world who would gladly sell you a
PSU for $10, knowing in advance that it is likely to catch fire and
possibly burn down your house.

it's not a good idea to sacrifice quality, in order to save money on
things that handle 115VAC.

Pretty sure it is atx. It's not THAT old, and we've added stuff to it before (a while ago). Good looking out though, i will check for sure.
Is it a micro-ATX PS?
