That depends on what exactly you're going to be smoking out of that pipe.

Are you near any large cities? Look for a head shop around there, they'll have all the pipes you need.

Why the heck do you want to voluntarily submit yourself to the influence of an addictive and toxic substance that smells like $|-|!7 ???

Have you ever actually smelt a pipe? They smell so much better then cigars and cigs! A pipe with some fine cherry blend tobacco, or one of the many other fine sented smells, is a great thing to be around. Also, it really isnt addictive. It's like a cigar, you dont inhale the smoke at all. You just let it roll around in your mouth for a while then blow it out.

Different strokes for different strokes, pal. My gf has to REMIND me that I haven't smoked in awhile b/c she likes it.
Then again something tells me you don't have a clue what a fine tobacco smells like.

dxkj, I was just at International Tobacco which is in The Plaza part of the King of Prussia Mall, and for the next few weeks they're going 30% off on all pipes, pouches, stands and tools. I got a gorgeous Pipa Croci normally $110 for $80, and I think he gave me a deal on 100g of Frog Morton On The Town, too. If you're anywhere near, I'd say check it out. They also had a number of good pipes (Peterson, Savinelli, etc) for under $50, some as low as $30. They also have a couple guys on-hand who actually smoke pipes, where many tobacco shops have guys knowledgeable in cigars but know little about pipes.

International Tobacco had a fairly light supply of tobaccoes. Mostly English and Oriental blends, which....if you're an inexperienced pipester, you might want to hold off on until you've gotten a small army (7-10) of pipes and have some that you don't mind "coloring" with a new flavor.

There is also a small chain A Little Taste of Cuba which has locations in Princeton NJ and New Hope (Bucks Cty). They have good aromatic blends in their jars for like $1.50/oz which is pretty darned cheap. Their selection of pipes is kind of weak, but you can find some nice pieces for decent prices.

For a starter pipe, AVOID DR. GRABOW. They are the crappiest of crap. You'd be better off getting a corncob pipe before you waste $10 on one of those crappers. Beware--some pipe shops also sell Grabows in their "Basket" which is where they put seconds. Grabows have a spade on the shank. Do NOT buy them. You can often find good starter pipes in the bargain basket, but do NOT get a Grabow.

Other things to look for in a starter pipe:
bent stem--bent stem is a little harder to clean, but it's easier to hold in your mouth and will keep the bowl down so that foul juices don't run up the stem into your mouth.
thick bowl--look for thicker wood--it will smoke cooler and you'll be less likely to burn a hole through it while you're breaking it in.

If you need any tips, post back here and I'll turn my PM on and I'd be glad to help you out.

Allow me to buy you a clue. No matter how good it feels, it ain't worth dyin' for.

I've watched five friends die in the last seven years from tobacco related illnesses. Try watching someone painfully struggle to pull their last breath, like I have, and tell me again how great that feeling is and how much it's worth. :(

I know we all have to go, one way or another, but volunteering for it is simply stupid. :|

Tobacco is addictive (period)

It causes cancer (period)

So you don't inhale (deeply - ever heard about second hand smoke?) - do you know anything about mouth and throat cancer?

You will inhale the smoke coming off the pipe as will anyone who is around you. Tobacco is directly related to all sorts of respiratory illnesses.

And it smell better than cigars and cigs . . . that's like saying chicken$#!t smells better than bull$#!t. Pipe smoking only looks "cool" in your mind - to the rest of us it looks stupid.

Now that you have my opinion and the opinion of most nonsmokers, go to a pipeshop and choose a way to end your life early with the pipe you choose. It should be made in person. And learn how to "break-in" a pipe properly - a good pipeshop will educate you on your newly chosen addiction.

Not in the quantities the average pipester takes in. Sure, if you're dropping 8 bowls a day, you're going to have a tough time kicking the habit. If you smoke once every couple days, I can tell you from experience that if you take off for awhile, you're not going to expereince any withdrawal symptoms. It's not addictive enough, especially when it lacks the additives that most cig manufacturers add to make it more addictive, and when it lacks direct physical contact with your mouth as with chew and cigars.

So does everything else :)[/i] >>

It's more like saying a rose smells better than a carnation. Believe you me, I fine tobacco blended with latakia and/or perique when raw or burnt, beats the smell of all cigarettes and many cigars. Not to mention, for some reason pipe smoke doesn't seem to hang in the room for days the way a cigar does.

<< Pipe smoking only looks "cool" in your mind - to the rest of us it looks stupid. >>

Very few people who smoke pipes do it for the approval of others. Frankly, it's too expensive and time-consuming a habit to take up just for an "image" and why anyone would even WANT to adopt an image that typically makes one think of their grandfather is beyond me.
You smoke pipes b/c you like smell, you like the taste, you like the ritual, you like the concept of functional art, or maybe holding fire in the palm of your hand. If you can't see a reason to do it, then don't!

I've been submitted to second hand smoke from my parents all my life, and i continue to be as i walk around this world, I have a feeling smoking a pipe once or twice a week isnt going to increase my chances of dying that much

thanks again for the advice Jzero, and others

<< For a starter pipe, AVOID DR. GRABOW.

Just out of curiousity, why avoid Grabow??
>>

There's just a general consensus that they are the absolute worst pipes ever made, for a variety of reasons:
--Substandard wood
--Nasty precarbonization on the bowl is supposed to make it break-in faster, but it really just makes the first 5-6 bowls taste funny
--I had one with a threaded shank that worked fine one day and then I picked it up the next week and the shank was stripped and I still can't get it off
--They don't really smoke all that well--the precarbonization prevents moisture from soaking into the wood, so they smoke very hot and wet and make you burn your tongue.

They're just pretty much the butt-end of low-end pipes. There's no need to go get a $100+ pipe, you can get great ones for $20-$30, just don't spend $10 on a Grabow :)
Interestingly, Dr. Grabow has a higher-end line, called Alpha. The models are designated by other greek letters--so there's Alpha Kappa, Alpha Gamma, etc. Despite being manufactured by the same company, they are remarkably good value. I got an Alpha Kappa for $25 and it's one of my better pipes.
Some brands I'd recommend for cheaper pipes:

Calabrest
Alpha
Savinelli
Peterson (if you can find a cheap Peterson, that is).
There should be sub $50 models by each brand and they're all pretty good.

Interesting, I've had a few Grand Dukes and my only complaint is that I keep biting through the mouthpeice. (Although I know what you mean about the first couple of bowls tasting odd). Normally when I get a new one, I'll light it and get it good and hot a couple of times then scrape it down to bare wood and start over to get a good carbon coating in the bowl. Granted it's by no means comparable to my Meerschaum but I don't have any problems with them for smoking on a regular basis.

You know what George Carlin says about people who smoke pipes? Here's a clue: I can't repeat it in this forum.

So you like the smell of pipes? You know what smells even better? A woman. Get one of those. Oh wait, considering what Carlin says about pipe smokers, perhaps you don't want a woman. Nevermind.
