And another thing, what bow is better, the Asian composite bow or the English Longbow? Are they the same or what?

I was a pretty good archer in my younger days. My dad bought me a crude 35lb bow to help me straighten out my left elbow. I had broken it and calcium deposits made it almost impossible to bend it. But with constant practice my elbow finally became usable again. At that time all I wanted was a Zebra wood Fred Bear bow. They weren't making compounds at that time but a Bear bow was a thing of beauty. Funny thing is my dad took me to an East Detroit Belgum bar on Harper Avenue and I won a tournament against a guy with a 45lb Bear Grizley bow.

I really like these ancient reproductions and would like to own one. If i got one I would be afraid to shoot ot because they are so beautiful.

I just can't figre the average Mongol being able to shoot something that powerful on horseback with any degree of accuracy. I bet they used the 120 pounders on foot for seige work.

Why is this difficult for you to believe? I guess all the historians are wrong.

I just couldn?t see myself or anyone I know being able to regularly accomplish that feat. But I understand that Mongols virtually lived in horseback. A life in the wild probably forced them to develop skills uncommon to Western urban folks like myself.

I haven?t read the whole thread sygyzy are you an accomplished archer? Have you ever tried to shoot a bow on horseback? I have a hard enough time just mounting a horse. I would probably kill it and myself if I tried to shoot a bow at speed.

I know American Indians used a bow on horseback for hunting and war. So it isn?t a stretch to think that the Mongols did as well. The only difference is I don?t think the Indians ever had anything approaching 120lbs.
