where can I buy a custom-sized piece of wood?

there's some newfangled technology that some people are calling a "saw". I don't know much abou tit, but you might be able to find one of these mystical pieces of equipment.

You may be able to have them find a scrap that is left over from a previous cut.

if you want exactly an inch thick, i've bought pieces of pine at home depot that are butt jointed pieces of scraps. the keyboard tray i'm using now was made out of such a piece.

otherwise, if you just want a 1x, just go to home depot, buy a 1x6 or 1x8, and ask them to chop it off for you.

For starters, you want 5/4, not 1 if you want an actual 1" piece of wood.

And just go to HD or Lowe's. It's cheap enough and they'll cut it for you.

WTF PEOPLE???!!!!! THIS IS ATOT!!!!! 8 REPLIES AND NOT A SINGLE DICK JOKE!!!!!

I am SO disappointed in you people :|

Actually, some of the wood is sold by the foot - you can buy any length you want. Or, if you don't care about the drive, swing by my house & I'll give you directions to one of the Amish sawmills around here. They'll cut it to whatever size you want & it'll be less than 1/2 the price of the same lumber at HD or Lowes.

Do Amish saw mills use an electrically driven arbor? Steam engines or even a hit or miss for a smaller mill would be interesting.

Find a smaller hardware store, such as ace hardware or tru-value, as they will normally sell you wood by the foot.

Or go to Home Depot / Lowes and check their scrap bin.

just get a small shelf at homedepot.
if you want to raise it a bit use door stoppers at the corners.

like so
if you need it shorter, use cabinet hardware..like cabinet handle knobs as the feet.

awesome idea

but where to buy this... lumber? for the shelf?

I've actually got a bookshelf in my back hall that I've been meaning to throw out except I can't figure out how so it's just been sitting there for months.
