They're not the same thing ... server racks these days almost have to be a "four poster" to support the back-end of the server ... you can't hang that much weight on one set of ears.

You can hang most switches, and panels on a two rail rack ... they don't have the leverage that the servers do; servers are 1-4 RU and 20-something inches deep ... too much leverage for such a short span on the ears.

So, look for a cheap four-poster if you intend to hang servers ..... if it's just network equipment and panels, then a cheap Chatsworth two-railer would do.

(Anixter, Greybar, google "chatsworth racks")

Good Luck

We have servers in "two rail" racks. There are brackets you attach to the rails and they extend to the front and back of the server so its centered.

Its a bit of a drive for you, but due to a recent virtualization push Livingston County will likely have a handful of extra racks in the comming months.

I'm not nuts on the 2 post server rail either, but as TheKub said, they do make rail kits that mount front and back on both posts and have rails that extend out the front and back to balance the equipment. We use them on all of our UPS's that sit on 2 post racks, however, I do mount them as low as possible in case they ever did fall. They are very sturdy though.

OK. I believe you ... aside from a couple dozen Sun servers in the last few months, I haven't played with them for a while. Now, what do you think the chances are that the mid-rail mounting kits for those servers cost as much or more than the OP's stated budget for just the rack?

Yeah. I don't think you can find any kind of NEW rack that'll hold a server for $50-$75.
