Where can I ask for value of an item?

I have an older commercial plasma display that's being replaced, and as it's in perfect working condition I'd like to put it up for sale on craigslist. The problem is I can't find it for sale anywhere and I'd like to know what a fair price would be to list the item for. I frequently see such threads closed in the technical forums to avoid "sales" that should be in FS/FT, but this isn't exactly something I would put up for sale there. Is there anyplace I can ask this here that doesn't break the rules, or should I go elsewhere?

Nada. The only thing that comes up are a few replacement parts. Nothing much on the web either, other than a couple of shops claiming to still sell it new, though I find that hard to believe as it was originally released in Dec 2004. Commercial units do stay on the market longer than consumer, but not THAT much longer.

not to beat eBay to death, but are you aware of the Advanced Search function you can use when logged in? it will show all previous auctions for the item that have been listed over a good amount of time that are now closed. you can see asking price and what sold for what price.

you could also contact sellers/distributors from the yellow pages and see if someone there can give you some advise. who knows, maybe they will want it for their own use (parts, resale, etcetera).

best of luck

Based on this description you would be perfectly fine putting up such a thread in the video forum (or any other forum that you felt was the proper audience).

The "no price checks" rule is really intended to prevent members from basically trying to drum up hits for their wares in ways that tend to cause problems for the community.

Threads discussing the value of items, to be purchased, to be sold, etc, are fine as they are not expressly created with the purpose of actually transacting a sale or promoting one that is happening or about to happen.

Thanks for the update. I'll keep it in mind for next time.

I posted these on craigslist a couple of months ago, and the 2 displays sold in under 20 minutes!

Probably priced them listed a tad low. :hmm:

:D
