There have been mp3 players for 5-6 years now in the market , but almost nothing for divx/xvid.

I bet a combo dvd/divx machine for 100-150$ would be a hot item.

They already have them, although a bit expensive. My friend play divx movies in his axiom and Archos have a player out that does mp3/video.

edit, not sure if the Archos player support divx.

On problem is the legal aspect. THe other is the ever changing format. There are so many different formats of MPeg4 compression out there, it's hard to make a player that will work for people. If you have a player that works with DivX3 and 5, but doesn't work for XviD or any of the others, you are dissapointing customers.

They won't make them until a single format is nailed down, like MPEG2 for dvds.

Can't they use something like FFDShow? It doesnt install the codec like you usually do and is compatible with Xvid and all forms of DivX.

When I saw the title, I thought you were referring to the failed Divx players that Circuit City once sold.

Lawsuit ? The RIAA tried that with Rio and got nowhere.

And the MPAA never even tried to sue DivxNetworks, so how can they go after hardware manufacturers who implement the codec.

Yeah, buy some people need to run a 40ft cable for that.

And you can't use the PC while playing a movie.

The MP3 format has remained the same this whole time. There's like a new DivX build every couple months right?

Yeah, no kidding.

A company named Napa (i think) actually released a portable VCD and MP3 player.

Three words: ATI theatre Mode ;)
Combined with a player where the video is shown in a window the size of an icon somewhere out of the way and presto, you can work on the PC while others watch DIVX, DVD or whathaveyounot. (winamp niceMC plugin works best, has smallest playback window footprint I could find)

I have one too. Its called an Xbox with XB Media Player

Interesting.

================================
Q: Where can I download compiled/executable/binary versions of XboxMediaPlayer for Xbox?
A: Not from this site or any other site that are in affiliation with us, (don't ask us where either). We only host and maintain the XboxMediaPlayer source code ( what is "source code?" (link) ).

Q: What do I need to compile XBMP 2.3 source code into a Xbox? executable/binary (xbe)?
A: You need legal copies of "Microsoft Visual C++" and "Microsoft Xbox SDK" (a.k.a. XDK).
Note! We do not support usage of the XDK (Xbox SDK), please do not ask is "how to use" it.
================================

Is it really this complicated ?

With all the old PC hardware just collecting dust in this world you would think some of you industrious little geeks would just make Divx boxes. I did. It is a P3 450 in a small case with a 4 gig HD. The only piece I bought was the Radeon video card w/TV out for $30 at the time. I have it set up to autoplay Divx movies on CD with ZoomPlayer and it defaults to fullscreen. I used an old remote control from a Pinnacle PCTV Pro and built the IR receiver into the front of the case and controlled by Girder software. It works basically like a DVD player yet is totally customizable. I even threw a DVD drive in it so I can play all formats of digital movies. It is a handy unit and small enough to take where ever I want to watch movies. I am sure most of you have old unused PC stuff laying around.....SO BUILD ONE!!!!!!!!!
