Where are the Age of Conan Reviews?

After not playing online games for a while (I played WOW a couple years ago for about 6 months), I'm really excited about AoC. That said, I absolutely refuse to buy a game until I read a couple good reviews (from both publications and users). So... where are the reviews for AoC? I know it's an MMOG and it takes at least a little while to play through some levels, but not even an initial impression anywhere...!?

It normally takes longer to review a MMO. Usually it's about 30 days after the release date when you start to see reviews.

There's plenty of Early Access impressions which are about as close as you can get; they're usually pretty short though. The real reviews will begin trickling in and not really amass until about a month after release.

It's hard to judge an MMO right away since betas usually use old builds and it takes a while to experience the wealth of content after release, so a week or so to a month is usually the sweet spot.

i'm losing my motivation to continue playing this game....

i got a brand new video card today thinking the graphic will make me like the game more...but no, a high setting with fps of 40 can't overcome my utter disappointment with this game. it feels a lot like playing guildwars with carnage and nipples. crafting is almost non-existent and the fact that bank, auction house isn't working at this point isn't helping.

the graphic is amazing, the combat is nice, but sadly, i don't think that's enough to carry this game.

the voice over is nice, but after tortage, all the quest npcs will only grunt at you (except the main class quest, still have unique voice over)

ocean of tears indeed. i could go on, but you guys are adults, you should give it a try and make up your mind. one positive thing about it is that i upgraded my video card.

edit: you can't have my stuff, i'll let my brother play my account until the month is up.

I was able to find two "first impression" articles so far:

http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/age-o...ventures/875522p1.html

Also, I watched a few minutes of Gamespot's marathon yesterday and it looked pretty good, albeit a near-clone of WoW. This, in addition to a couple user reviews I found made it seemed worth while. I just picked up the game and am installing it now (holy shite, it's taking forever...10 minutes now and just started to the 2nd disc).

However, I just found out the DX10 support has been removed from the game until at least fall. Extremely disappointing...

Much more than a WoW clone... gore, nudity, and far better graphics.

I'm having a hard time reviewing age of conan, when I'm only a few hours into the game 😛 I bet some sites will have real reviews up soon though. I'm wondering how it's selling ...

PC Gamer really only covers the 1-20 levels. No one has fully played AoC to L80 to tell the whole real story yet. Including the game reviewers. Levels 1-20 is only a small part of the game.

Latest Funcom press release said they shipped something like 700,000 units. Now for starters that could be very exaggerated, but even so those are some pretty decent numbers. I would say from an in game perspective it seems like there are more people around than LOTRO at release and defiantly a lot more than Vanguard.

As far as reviews/opinions on the game I am holding off a bit. The game is pretty solid but needs 2 or 3 big patches over the next month to bring it up to full steam. Things like mail boxes and trade posts (AH system) are still missing (taken out temporarily due to duping) and there are a few broken quests, people getting stuck a lot, some spells/combos that are broken, etc... Nothing game breaking for me but I would hate to really judge it until I see how they deal with these issues.

sadly, there are quite a few level 80's already.

i believe some were using the demonologist trick to get from lvl 50 to 80 fast...

Ya know - I'd say just go buy the game as it should come with a free month of play. Heck - most pc games today are around the same price tag - at least AOC will give you a lot more hack-n-slash for your buck... 🙂

I was in beta. I was dubious and I had thought I had cancel my pre-order cause I didn't want to go with it. Well somehow I didn't cancel and the game arrived. I booted it up and have been playing since Friday and I have to say I am finding it a blast and much more polished since beta. In fact I'm shocked how much smoother it's playing.

From that change alone I have to imagine Funcom wll smooth out a lot of the issues out there over the next month to give us one very polished MMO.

First time since EQ I am really enjoying an MMO and getting that sense of wonder. It's not perfect and it's a lot less time involved then EQ but that works for me as I am grown and working these days.

Seems they are finally putting an end to the demo exploit today, or so the update notes released so far seem to indicate.

I assume those are the hardcore power players that are getting to L80 fast. What can they tell us about real gameplay? Sure they can tell us some things but they are not really exploring the game and all it has to offer. So you cant really go by them as a good solid review. Also the professional reviewers dont do this so they cant give a really good complete review either. So far the best source of game info i have found is on the official forums and you have to have the game to access them and on top of that they dont have much on guides and walk throughs because they are still in the process of leveling up and putting the info out. Its not in collected organized format either.

The game is fun and different in many ways but also similar to past MMOs in some ways. If you want to try the game then I say do so and see for yourself but if you want complete guides, walkthroughs and the such its going to need a month before you see these in some kind of comprehensive organized form I'm thinking. The process is simply going to take some time since everything is still so new.

Not only themselves, but they were grouping up people to powerlevel their friends as well. I witnessed it myself and find it very disheartening that these kinds of exploits made it in from beta. Many of the 80s so far seem to have gotten there by exploits.

I liked AOC in beta , but I just get the feeling , from reading players comments, that it is popular right now because it is the new kid on the block.
I'm seeing lots of complaints that the higher levels of the game are lacking finished content.

Just hit level 20 after two 1/2 solid days of playing (with a Dark Templar). My initial impressions are excellent. A couple things that stand out:

- Great graphics. Not mind-blowing, but very impressive. Extremely detailed textures and long viewing distances (if you have the rig). Lighting and shadows are great although bloom is a little over-done in some spots. Reminds me of the Witcher a bit with a lot more detail and variety. A note: while DX10 is available as an option, DX10 has not been enabled yet. I got into a polemic with a couple people about this, and the consensus is it forces DX9 even if DX10 is selected. Word is the game will run in DX10 sometime this fall.
- Excellent atmosphere, also reminds me very much of the Witcher and NVW. Not as over-the-top and panty-waisted as WoW.
- Soundtrack is awesome. Glad for this reason alone I got the collector's edition which comes with the full disc.
- Single player campaign is a great addition and original in that you play it at night (while you play PvE during the day)
- Highly polished and easy-to-use GUI
- Great combat gameplay, heads and shoulders above WoW. A little like Guild Wars in that it makes you actually pay attention and use skill with "combos".
- Very cool NPC design

A couple of negatives:

- While the graphics are good, it takes a monster rig to run everything highest. I'm running a q9450, 4GB, 8800 GTX SLI OC and the game stutters from time to time and runs an average 75 FPS indoors and 40 outdoors (there is an in-game FPS tracker). Waiting for my dual 4870s to arrive 🙂
- Some main quests break if done out-of-order requiring GM reset
- The game is instanced a bit too much. I have of yet to see the huge environments that were in WoW. Note: everyone is complaining that the instances are too crowded, but I say this is entirely normal as everyone is playing in the same space now because the game just came out. They've been adding servers almost daily and are doing a good job load-balancing.
- At this point, the items (armor, weapons etc.) seems pretty limited, at least for the Dark Templar class.
- Races and classes are pretty slim (5-6 classes, but you only have 3 different classes to choose from limited by your race)

lol had to laugh at this! nudity and graphics are not what define a game, what does is GAME PLAY, if it ends up that it is much like WoW thats not such a bad thing in my book.

I just got rid of my WoW account 4 days ago, had seen and done most of the game and waiting around for new content and lvling up to 80 was not an option, moving on to something new is.

Might have to put done my $$$$ and give Conan a shot.
