I have the SATA Maxtor DiamondMax 10 250GB w/ 16 Meg cache. The model 6B250S0, which is supposed to have NCQ according to the Maxtor website. However I cannot find where to enable / disable it in the Windows XP SP2 device manager. I went and double clicked my drive icon in Device Manager but none of the tabs in the properties window has anything about NCQ. I need to make sure it is DISABLED because I have been reading it is currently unstable w/ my motherboard. Did I call "shinanigans!" on zipzoomfly for sending me the wrong drive??

[edit] also, what exactly is the SMART function in the BIOS? I had a crash when I tried to boot tonight with a complaint about a windows system file being missing or corrupt. I was able to boot by enabling SMART but I don't know what it really is.

Thanks fasteddie. haha that was fast. I found it by googling right after I posted this. It was disabled already. Now I just have to figure out what happened that my system didn't boot tonight and I got that windows system file error and black screen. I left it running overnight last night and it was still chugging along fine this morning. So I turned it off and went to work (our power here is kinda unreliable at times). Now I come home, go to boot, and this happens. DAMMIT!

What bios are you using? One or two of them cause problems if the boards are disconnected from an ac source.

I am just using the stock 1002 now. I tried that supposed "1003 final" the other day and my Maxtor SATA drive vanished. Maybe they'll have better luck with the 1004. Now the problem I had earlier with the black screen on bootup and the "missing or corrupted windows system file" disappeared after turning off SMART again. Wierd stuff. It all followed my system locking up while I was going about setting my preferences in my newly installed XP. On reboot the screen went blank after post and I had to unplug / replug the video cable to see the "missing or corrupted windows system file" message on the screen. I shut down totally, unplugged PSU, then turned back on and went into bios to look at settings. I decided to enable SMART and then save - exit. It booted to windows ok. I rebooted and disabled SMART, same problem happened again. Later on I rebooted again but disabled smart and it booted ok. . .very worrysome.
