Giving up on the 6800's. What's the comparable PCI-Express ATI card for price/performance?

The X800 XL should be arriving in the next few weeks. It is supposed to rival a 6800gt in performance for only $300. We will see if there are enough launched, and if they are actually selling at MSRP. If they are selling at $300, the prices of the 6800gt are going to come back down to MSRP as well.

Only thing keeping me away from going with the x800 xl is no sli. Maybe down the road ill want to throw in another 6800gt and double my perfomance, with the x800 xl I couldnt do that.

Looks like I'll be waiting a few weeks either way.
Time to go cancel my Chumbo order.

Chumbo is now listing the 6800 GT PCI-E as "Highly Allocated." I just called them and they said they wanted to stop people from placing more orders until the next shipment comes in (still saying 2-3 weeks). For those of us with cards on order, the rep. indicated that he thought all the back orders would be filled with the next shipment, but he didn't know how many cards they were actually getting nor would he indicate where I was on the list. Hope this helps.

That's a convenient way to keep you as a customer.

No clue how many they'll get.
Not telling how many we need.
Speculating that everyone will get one.

Pathetic, isn't it?

I just called them.. canceled my order. I had JUST gotten in on one and dont expect to get in on first shipment he said. Guess I'll either be waiting until this card is more readily available or keep searching the web.

Now I guess the excitement I'll have to contain and play the waiting game ever more... might be taking another look at the 6600GT though.. couldnt pain me too much to save upwards to $270(!)

(average hard to find 6800GT PCIE $450 versus the lowest, easy to find readily available 6600GT PCIE $180)

I decided not to cancel my order since I don't have any immediate alternative. But I'll keep looking because I have every other piece of my new system waiting at the house.
