where and how did "pwned" originate?

Way before CS. I remember it on Quake 2 servers back in the ancient days. In those dialup and slow PC days, the server owner, with experience, a fast PC, broadband connection, and a 0 ping, had a significant advantage. Thus, many users got "owned." AFAIK, "pwned" came about because many server owners didn't like to be reminded of their advantage, and banned the word "owned."

Yep. Gaming was a bit different back in those days.

I remember pwned from Quake 1 CTF. Good god, for a time there I played that game at 2400 bps.
