When's the soonest we can see something new from AMD?

I don't feel like I need an X6 but I would like something new or a next step.

Damn, some folks are never satisfied. The new hexacores should be enough for now! Go with one of those and Be Happy. Otherwise wait for Bulldozer.

I've built a couple Phenom II X3 720 where I unlocked the 4th core and OC'd to 3.2 or 3.4 GHz. So I think I'd rather have an X4 for <$100 then an X6 for $200, although I would like to at least get a C3 stepping.
Maybe I should consider an Athlon II 440 X3. It's a minor investment that could easily get me through another year. Right now I have an Intel Conroe dual core OC'd from a default of 1.86 to 2.8 GHz and my gf has a Sempron X1 . Maybe I wouldn't see a big boost but wth for <$150 for a 785G mobo and an Athlon II 440.

IMO i would either wait or just spring for a X6 and know you wont have a CPU bottleneck for a while. The athlon II's are pretty crippled by the lack of cache.

I don't know how long it will take to hit retail, but the 1035T is already out there in some OEM boxes. It will hit eBay eventually, at the very least.

what i would like to see is a fast tri-core or quad core with dynamic turbo for gaming.
the extra 3/2 cores on an X6 wont help improve my FPS while a higher frequency and turbo on a less power-hungry chip are definitely welcome.

and AMD, please dont make me get DDR3 like Intel does, and i will consider you for my next upgrade.

New AMD CPU will not be out until Q2 2011. If you want more speed, you can get an SSD. It will feel like a CPU upgrade in some things. Otherwise just save your $ if you already have a quad AMD at 3.2ghz +.

You can get a DDR2 board with an AM3 cpu.

they're not *that* crippled...it really depends on what he's running.

Yeah, the Athlon II X4 635 often outperforms slightly the Phenom II X4 940 which runs at 2.80GHz. Only in games, the L3 cache makes a difference, up to 30%, the same goes in cache limited situations.

If you really want "the next step" past an x6, get a magny-cours and the single socket supermicro board for it.

If I had the cash, that's what I would have right now.

I'd be an Intel user/fanboi.

There, fixed.

Onto the topic, I guess we will see Llano's desktop variants before bulldozer but, most of them in here are interested in bulldozer anyway. Personally, I would love to see bulldozer on AM3 platform, I hope they deliver on their promises this time around.

On a side note, If you have an x6 I don't see the need to upgrade for at-least 2 years from now.

I'm not really a fangirl of anything except the best performance per dollar and per watt. I have intel atom, core2 duo, athlon x2, nvidia, ati, linux, bsd, windows... whatever works best for the situation and the dollar.

The magny-cours is insanely good right now for the power used and cash required.

yasasvy - fellow saluki alumnis?

I loved carbondale, I miss it.

I still wear my quatro's cap 🙂

wow, a saluki. Not yet an alumni, In Master's program right now. Oh quatro's, am a regular to enjoy the $1 pitcher night 😀.

Nice to meet you BTW.

At best probably see refresh of CPU's by end of year. Some announcement about bulldozer in August suggest January best time line for it.
case in point--

Unless doing heavy rendering, or similar, most games don't even use all four cores on a quad. Why bother with hex core until programming catches up. Maybe in time for Win 8, probably going to be enough of a resource hog to actually use 6 cores, lol.

Totally agree with this idea. I've been running a X3 720BE OC'd to 3.4Ghz for a while now and got myself a 60GB SSD for OS and apps and my PC feels faster than ever.
