Shave daily... it'll toughen your neck up. I shave prior to the shower, simply because I dont want the shaving cream on my face through the day (and I dont feel like washing my face again after a shower) :)

also try a different brand razor, some razors have lubricant that can cause irritation

I've heard if you shave in the morning, you'll have more success if you've been awake (and upright) for at least half an hour. Something about the fluids in your face equilibrating or something like that... I seem to notice if I shave at night versus the morning..

I shave right after getting out of a hot shower. I get a great shave using a thin undercoat of Noxema and Gillette Foamy. My face is already about as moisturized as it's going to get, and this combo just holds the moisture for the whole shave.

This isn't the same as using Noxema shave cream, which has too much menthol for me, and it stings my face.

Definitely get a sensitive skin shaving cream (I personally like gels better since they give a more teflon-like smoothness to the skin's surface.) When I first started shaving regularly I used to get razor burn and irritation all the time too. Switching to sensitive skin gel and getting a decent razor fixed all that. The only problem is the more you shave, the more you HAVE to shave. Sometimes I feel like I'm turning into the Wolfman by mid-afternoon.

I can't shave at night though, because I have such a thick beard that if I did, I'd have lots of stubble by morning.

I could shave 3 times a day and still have stubble.

hella annoying......

that's why I think I'm actually getting irritated, because I shave with the blade in the morning, then usually go over it with an electric after work for night-time activities.

<< When's the best time to shave? >>

best time is the morning, right after a nice shower. if you take night showers, then you can still shave the next morning, that way, you'll be clean and shaved for the entire day, and looking your best.

the Gillette Mach-3 is the best razor out there. try using it it might help with the bumps. also try a aloe shaving gel.

Shave in the shower. It's the most comfortable. I've rigged up a small mirror in my shower for this purpose.

i've been meaning to get in the habit of doing that... but how do you get the mirror to not fog up?

Using an electric shaver, I like to shave before a shower (in the mornings). The little bit of oil on my face seems to help keep the shave smooth and keep it pretty close. If I use the electric after the shower, it doesn't quite do the job I want.

However, when using a blade (haven't done so in a while), I like using it after the shower since my face has most of the oil and dirt removed, while still being soft for the razor to get close. Sometimes I do both and it comes out extra smooth.

I spit water at it to de-fog it, and the glass heats up after a few minutes, so the fogging is not so bad. It's really not that big of an issue, compared to the advantages.

but i've used the stick-on mirrors in the shower before and it fogged up so bad you couldn't see for more than a few seconds

Now days I shave in the shower - no mirror, after shaving for this many years I don't need the mirror.

However, if you don't want to shave in the shower (and you're using a razor rather than electric) then definitely after showering not before. The shower helps soften the hair. It's why in those old movies and in some barbershops still, they show the barber wrapping a hot wet towel around the guys face before shaving him.

As the others said - get a Mach3 and use a shaving cream for sensitive skin. Chances are you'll still get some nicks and razor burn, but a lot less than with any other method.

aka - he with the 5 o'clock shadow 1/2 hour after shaving.

Go to your local Home Depot and ask for a heating sheet. Not sure if it is called that, but it's flexible and has an adhesive side. I forget what you power it with (either 120V or a battery), but just slap it on the back of the mirror.

BTW, you're not supposed to shave first thing in the morning. Your face gets puffy when you sleep, and waiting will let your skin regain it's tautness (hopefully eliminating the bumps).

You can buy anti-fog shower mirrors. Works great. Every few months it kinda wears off, but if you wash it with soap and scrub it, the anti-fog comes back. Don't ask me how, I just use the thing :)

I've also heard this... but I don't have that much time in the morning to sit around and wait for my face to get less puffy..... i barely have time for breakfast
