When you're older, Mission Impossible is really just silly.

This is regarding their latest installment.

Yet another shadowy organization wants to kill lots of people. They can obtain uranium cores and that's the only thing stopping from nuking everyone. The time is of UTMOST importance, every hour counts. The mission, should Tom Cruise chooses to accept it, contains millions of lives hanging on one middle aged agent with a rag-tag 4-man crew.

Why isn't DOJ making this priority #1 on this doomsday scenario?

Also why are missions delivered in these cheeky contraptions? Why doesn't he just open his laptop and check his email?

I've enjoyed them.

Except for #2. Even though Tom Cruise was at the peak of his attractiveness in that movie I just can't get through it. I don't now why.

I can suspend disbelief quite easily during M:I movies. The only thing that ever really bothered me was the plot hole in the first: how in the world did IMF not know about the safe house? That should have been the first place they sent agents. Instead - Ethan is allowed as much time as he needs to come up with a plan. They should have explained that.

Well 2 was just a string-flying cartoonish BS to begin with.

Here's the hard-to-swallow pill: ALL movies are stupid. Go back & watch the original Star Wars trilogy as an adult. Slow pacing, among a myriad of other problems. But that doesn't mean that I love Star Wars any less, or Bill & Ted, or Back to the Future!

Movies exist for entertainment. Most are kinda dumb, some are good, and some are really great. For pretty much all of them, you have to put on your 12-year-old-kid hat & just enjoy the movie for what it is. Doing a film analysis on any episode from the Fast & Furious franchise is going to be an exercise in sadness. But, turn off the lights, turn up your subwoofer, and enjoy the show with some snacks and you can have a pretty great time! There's nothing I love more than unplugging at the end of a long day & digging into a great TV series or movie.

There are dumb movies out there. Go & watch "In the Name of the King" if you want a good laugh (at its terrible-ness, lol). Some shows jump the shark, too - like, I'm a big Walking Dead fan, but I'm a couple seasons behind because Negan got so cheesy & the story kind of stalled out. I'm currently enjoying the Orville (Seth McFarlane). I just saw Howl's Movie Castle (special dubbed re-release in theaters with digital projection), which was awesome to see on the big screen. I think two things are important when watching movies:

1. Calibrating your expectations to the movie in question
2. Putting on your kid-hat & turning off the analytical part of your brain

Like, I watched the Rampage movie with the Rock. It's the same as every other Rock movie: Rock gets in trouble, Rock is awesome, Rock fixes the situation. But it was really fun for a popcorn flick! Is it up there with say, Shawshank Redemption? No, but I went in knowing it was a "The Rock" movie & I put on my kid-hat & enjoyed some popcorn. Mission Impossible movies are the same way...some are actually really good (first one was amazing! I had to re-watch it a second time in order to figure it out, haha!), some are pure action movies, but you more or less know what you're getting...Tom Cruise running around at full-tilt, doing crazy stunts, with a time-driven story & a crew of helpers to assist him in getting the job done. If you stop enjoying the sillyness & start analyzing the reality of the show, then your fun factor is going to go waaaaaay down, lol.

It's the same reason why so many people jumped on Sharknado...you KNEW it was going to be really stupid going in, and that's what made it fun. It's like eating fast food...you know exactly what you're getting, and you enjoy it for what it is, lol!

Was it the magic motorcycle jump-hugging scene? :p

The only MI I've watched is Fallout (2018), 2-3 weeks ago. Damn impressive with my stereo turned up. I'm not into car chase scenes and this had them like crazy. They are always trying to one up the ones before, and this goes in that direction. Anyway, I thought it was pretty awesome. Wasn't sure I understood all the plot points, did a little research after watching the movie.

I remember my mother was excited when she took me to see the first movie in the 90's when I was just a kid and her telling me it was based on a show she watched when she was young. I just couldn't for the life of me keep up with the plot.

Its a fucking movie stop trying to read to far into things. Sit back relax and enjoy the action flick. Christ man put down the bowl for a week or two and see if that helps you get a little bit more perspective.

I actually like how the latest movie made a point to be as ridiculous as possible with the helicopter scene at the end. At least they decided to go for it and be as over the top they could.

Because a message delivered in a cheeky contraption is more entertaining than watching Tom Cruise read an e-mail for five minutes in silence. Movies that stayed true to real life would be boring as hell. Mission Impossible would be two hours of paperwork and 15 minutes of a SWAT arrest.

Cruise was MANGEY as all hell in the second one. He probably got snapper by just grunting back in those days.

OP, I hate to tell you, but most movies would suck if they stuck to reality.
Yes we all get this, but there's a difference in good and bad movies right? After 8475th installment, they can pay bit more attention to their script & world-building to be more gripping if you will.

See Daniel Craig's 007 & Casino Royale reboot (wtf 12 years ago). Yes anyone can pick that movie apart, but it's become so good compared to completely ridiculous past Bond films.

Love the MI movies. III being my least favorite and I haven't seen Fallout yet. But looking forward to my opportunity to see it. Love the Entertainment. That's all I got to say about that.

Tell me about it. What's amazing is that he was 40 (or almost 40) when he made that movie. He looks like a 26-27 year old with no discernible plastic surgery.

Man crush for me.

OK, watched that sequence again last night. I think it's because of Hillary. Um, ya know, the whole security thing with respect to electronic communications sent over networks... just how secure can they be? Not my area of expertise, but obviously, it's an issue with respect to IMF. So, makes sense, it's a contraption that delivers a verbal message and then self destructs in "5 seconds." Thing is, at least for me, the message was pretty complicated. What if our shrewd experienced agent didn't quite get it? No replay, no recording. Couldn't he have a recording device going as he listens to it? Couldn't he have a device to record a text message off of it? Yeah, obviously a good idea but, well, I'm willing to take that as it comes. The cinematic values, the sound on this are stellar. They overdo the car/motorcycle chase sequences, but they always do that.

Cruise was really good in Fallout. He did his own stunts!!! He did those jumps from building to building, I read. He broke an ankle and set shooting back 9 weeks, they say. What impressed me the most was his acting. His facial expressions. The subtlety of them during verbal communications was beyond impressive for me. Makes it clear that he was deeply aware of what was going on, not just delivering lines. And I was steadily impressed, not just occasionally. I thought the casting in general was quite good.

I saw it because I read that it was the best of the lot, hadn't seen the others. I was NOT disappointed, to put it mildly.

Yeah, they did the Flash Gordon cliff hanger thing all the way and then some.

They are action movies for children. You watch them to be entertained, not to think about it too hard. Thinking about it missing the point. Shut up and enjoy it, or don't watch it.

Now ask me what I think of Star Wars.
