<< Valhalla1, we all know what ur implying. If you didnt care, you wouldnt post in this thread >>

okay why is everyone bashing me. I just said they crap in a hole, people all over the world have different "methods", and my Indian FRIEND told me thats what he remembered when he visited there as a child.

Why are you bashing me? I have great respect for Indians, they are some of the hardest working people you'll find, academically and otherwise. So shut the fuc# up already and bash the guy who said they are unwashed and stinky, not me

Try to separate opionion from stereotyping. :-D And don't use phrases that don't mean anything.

<< We have some of the smartest people in the World. Many child-geniuses come out our country. >>

Technically anyone on the planet could say that about their country. 'Some of' and 'many' are vague terms that could apply to any region.

<< We have some of the most beautiful landscapes known to man. >>

That's your opinion and maybe the opinion of many millions of people, but it's not fact. It's also one of those 'some of' statements that could apply to anywhere. Also it isn't relevant to a discussion of the people.

<< We are one of the most diverse countries too. >>

Define diverse. Presumably the majority of the Indian population is native.

I try to avoid being racist (I was raised in a farming town in the South of the US, so I'm fighting an uphill battle), and so far the things expressed in this thread are nothing but baseless stereotypes, so I don't hold to them. I got nothing against Indians and nothing to elevate them above anybody else in my eyes either. Personally I think ethnic and national pride is pretty damn stupid and is holding back the advancement of the human race.

Incidentally, having a 1 billion person population pretty much means that even if the percentage of people in the country are in X group is 1/4 of the percentage in America (X being a group such as computer programmers, geniuses, etc), the actual number of them will be about the same (presuming an American population of about a quarter billion).

I.e., if 1% of the Indian population rates as Genius, and 3% of Americans do, then that means 10 million Indians are geniuses, and 7.5 million Americans are, so even though a higher percentage of Americans are geniuses, Indians APPEAR to have more overall. Sheer volume is often able to make up for lower percentages, as Wal*Mart finds daily. :)

And please don't flame me for using that as an example, I don't have any numbers, I picked the first one I noticed in the other post and used it.

Valhalla1: I was quoting your reply about the toliets..not bashing you about the "smelly ppl" thing. I'm sorry if I came across that way. I was just peeved...you would be too if you were in my position.

Lord Evermore: Ok..I agree some things I said could be based as opinions..such as the beautiful landscapes and smartest people. However you would agree with me about the beautiful landscape if you were the experience the Himalayas first hand, as well as the jungles of southern India.

As for the diverse: they may all be Indian...but they all have different cultures, values, and languages. Sikh's believe in different Gods, they have different beliefs and culture that southern Indians..etc.. Also the "arts" such as dances, music, poetry is totally different across the country. From Bharat natyam in the North to Kathak in the South. Actually the fact that they seperate themselves from other Indians is one of the reason India is not what it could be and it's something that pisses me off....but that's for another discussion.

BTW, Lord Evermore, could you explain why national pride is stopping people from moving forward. I would think it would be the other way around. One country's competitiveness against other countries would push them forward to do new things and in turn the other countries would do the same.

May be I think like that because I tend to group one whole country as one person when comparing them to other countries. I like to think of them as teams at a science fair set on the world stage.

BTW, this is my first "real-world" discussion on Anandtech (and internet bbs in general). I feel proud =)

As for the guy who said "the slow drivers who make me late for work": I would think "its the crazy, aggressive tail-gaters who cut other ppl off to get to work faster so they can work more hours that make me late for work" =) =)

National/Ethnic pride = everybody wants to kill everybody else for no reason other than they're from somewhere else. War may accelerate research a lot of the time, but if we weren't trying to kill each other all the time, we'd probably be just as happy with lower tech stuff and doing the slow research thing.

Hold on here. I live across the street from a LARGE family of Indians. I see them most everyday. They spend ALOT of time in there garage hooked up to some kind of giant bong thing with long pipes smoking what ever is in it. They are in that garage more than there house. The few times I have spoken with them I noticed that they smelled. The gas station I buy gas at is owned by Indians also. I have noticed them to smell at times as well. I never said that Indian people are dumb, not nice, friendly, etc. The few Indians I come in contact with give me the impression that they just dont bath often. So that is the first thing I think of. And why is it that the men wear slacks and dress shirts but the women have to wear the sheet thing? Sorry I dont know the name for it?

Lord Evermore: I didn't mean Ethinic pride like that...that's just a select few fanatics from each country that think like that. I was more along the lines of feeling proud of what your country has done and accomplished, much like how you feel proud of what your parents/children/family have done and accomplished. You feel good about your country. But you shouldn't feel hatred towards others either..

Well I would love to argue more..but I got school tomorrow and exams next week...Calculus awaits.

Goodnight.

Darker i really don't think its fair basing your opinions on two families. Btw i the clothing the woman wear is a sari, i think. And i think your question about why they wear something is like asking you why you wear pants and why a girl may wear a skirt. it really doesn't make much sense.

Depends on what indian movie you watch. some are just outright garbage that appeal to idiots or just fans of the actors starring in them.

Some movies on the other hand are amazing and beautiful...movies such as Dil Se, Bombay, Pukar (most won't agree with me on this one), Hey Ram. Again these are my opinions..but watch the movies with english subtitles if you really would like to see how they are.

BTW, for the first sentence.. I dont mean the idiots are the fans of the actors...just saying some viewers are idiots while others would watch the movie just to see their actor of choice. I would see any Aishwarya Rai movie regardless of how it is.

there was some guy on howard stern one time, that had like a 90% accuracy in his "talent". he was a cab driver in NY, and came in contact with lots of cultures. his talent was that he could identify the race/ethnicity of a person by smelling them, while blindfolded.

it was pretty interesting. :Q
