When you say "Lag" what do you mean?

When you say "Lag", what are you describing?

  • Bad Ping; poor internet latency; causing spikes

  • Bad Framerate, caused by weak video/CPU

  • A combination of bad framerate and poor internet connection

Lag is used to describe a few different things, participate in this pole to see who is right

It's compared to the way people sometimes say "CPU", they may either mean the actual processor itself or possibly the entire box that houses the motherboard and other components

one is obviously correct though, hahah!

Internet lag. People who use "lag" to describe bad framerates are retarded and cause confusion.

I generally say lag as in my latency/connection has gone to shit and I am experiencing poor latency or spikes, etc.

When I use the word lag, I use it to mean "to fall behind". IE, AMD is lagging behind intel.

lagger - usually a person who has just killed you - in whatever online game one is playing. Though when you killed him previously - it was only due to your obvious skillz :)

In computing terms it only relates to network performance. Otherwise, it carries the standard definition.

I use it for other things besides network performance. I can have audio lag for instance on a video I am watching. But that's how you work. :p

The only other example I could think of was storage(HD) performance. I've never had sound "lag" on videos. I'd describe it as being "out of sync".

Good God, does nobody on this forum know the difference between a pole and a poll?

Network performance. How can a poor frame rate be 'lag'?

I define lag as the interval of time when I request a beer and when my wife delivers it.

Lag usually means the game stops being responsive. In megaman games for nes, too much shit on the screen would make the controls less responsive and people called it lag. The characters action lags behind your input command.

When ever it hiccups or freezes up, due to internet or a gpu issue. I just say lag.

But The term is most applied to internet lag then video/hardware lag.

Lag is the difference between Input and Output. The causes can be many things and hence why it usually comes with a descriptor like Mouse Lag or Internet Lag.

This is correct. This should not even be that annoying. What's annoying was when people thought a good ping meant you couldn't lag, but latency is more than ping.

This has always pissed me off. I describe poor network performance as lag. I describe poor hardware performance as choppy.
