When you rent a car...

You are insured through the agency you use correct? I just sold my truck and am in the process of moving to another state. In the meantime, I cancelled my auto insurance since there was no point in paying it until I buy another vehicle.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Just wanted to double check.

When I was renting while working, I also opted out of the the rental companies insurance offereings because my employer covered it.

But when renting for personal use, I always went ahead and paid the extra $8-$20 a day for theirs. Last thing I want to deal with is having to cough up a $1000 deductable and then the jacked up insurance premiums if some a-hole keyed the rental or backed into me in a parking lot.

- Edit...

I don't know if rental companies insurance covers medical expenses if it happened to come to that. Keep that in mind.

If you have no other insurance, obviously get it. Otherwise, it's a ripoff. Similar to Best Buy's "protection plan". In other words: massive profit.

Depends on the state. If you don't have auto insurance though I would definitely get the collision damage waiver.

It's the biggest waste of money actually. If you have full coverage insurance it will most likely cover a rental car (check with your insurance company first though).

Yes, but if you get in an accident, and then claim it on your insurance, your rates will go up, and you have to pay out for your deductible. If you get the rental insurance, there is no claim on your insurance company's records.

If you are a horrible driver and frequently get into accidents that are your fault.

I would read the fine print on that agreement. Many times the rental agency will try to go through your insurance for damage even if you have the insurance...that's the way it used to be anyway.

Edit-I always decline the insurance. I have yet to get into an accident in a rental car.

<--Used to work for a car rental agency.
