When you are walking across the street...

In a cross walk do you hurry if there are cars waiting to turn?
Do you ever walk against the walk/don't walk sign? If you DO, are you more likely to walk faster?
Me, I always try to show courtesy. If people are waiting to turn, or if the light changes while I'm still in the cross walk, I speed up!

The other day I was sitting at a light when a group of about 6-8 "kids" that looked straight out of "The Hood" strolled across the cross walk, against the light and if anything slowed down when they saw people were upset. MAN that pissed me off!!!

The best way to GET respect, is to SHOW respect!

Depends on where I am and what the car that is waiting for me is doing. If they are acting overly aggressive I will take my time. But if they were polite and stopped at a cross walk so I could cross I will show some hustle.

I don't rush across, but I walk smartly across. I will not walk across if cars are coming and it says not to, because htey have to wait and it's inconvenient for them.

Course, in birmingham all the fat whales drive everywhere anyway. No sidewalks except in the inner city, where people don't go anyhow 😉

This bugs me too.

The one I really hate is when people are standing on the curb for a long time, when they could cross perfectly well, and then only when a car is extremely close do they step out in front of it. Then they get angry, and cross slowly on purpose.

This happens all the time in my stupid suburban downtown. I sit at the Starbucks near the corner and watch.

sometimes i do... but i am on campus. some of these drivers need to show respect for US.

ppl here cut things so close. I'm very surprised we haven't had more pedestrian accidents. The whole "you can walk" flasher is useless IMO. No one follows it... mainly because it is a campus setting, you give the pedestrian the right of way (within reason.. no one is asking for cars to stop when they have the green going straight).

otherwise, off campus, yes, i do try to get out the way as soon as i can so they can go.

Depends on the cirumstances. When I'm crossing Brigantine Blvd in a crosswalk where the speed limit is 30 and you are 200 yards away, I expect to be able to make it across the street at a brisk pace without you even having to slow down.

If you're going 50 (yes, you in the silver Corvette, I still remember you and I will be watching out for you), that's not my fault. Slow the eff down and obey crosswalk laws.

Otherwise, I try to hustle, especially when I've got my kayak in tow.

It's a two-way street (no pun intended). If I'm in a crosswalk I promise not to step in front of you just as you approach, and I will get across as quickly as I can. In return I ask that you slow down for me if you're going so freakin' fast.

Yes, I do the same thing because I know how people are always in a hurry to get somewhere, and I wouldn't like to be unneccesarily delayed if I was in the vehicle.

As far as the kids in the hood thing, yeah I think they are idiots and deserve to get run over. (ok, not REALLY run over, but they are really foolish to think that going slow will make us drivers respect them...what a joke!)

I hate when pedestrians don't wait their turn. A person in a car shouldn't have to wait 10 minutes for a group of people to all cross the road single file, the people that arrive after the car should have some respect and let the car go through. I always stop at the crosswalk if a car was alread there waiting for someone else to cross.

i hate when this happens too. i figure the pedestrian should let the car go by first cuz A) the car is bigger and can do more damage to the pedestrian than the pedestrian to the car if there were to be a collision between the two and B) it takes more energy to stop the car than it takes for the pedestrian to stop him/herself.

The speed at which people walk in general just cracks me up.

Now I don't power walk everywhere or anything, but I walk at a pretty good pace. When going by most people it amazes me to think how long it must take them to get anywhere. I think I could walk on my hands faster then a lot of people walk. I'm not talking about elderly people or little kids, but adults in their 20-40s.

Yes, and going back to this thread, I hustle across roads even when it says walk. Cars are a lot bigger than I am and the last thing I need is for some idiot to hit me because he's drunk or not paying attention because I'm taking my sweet time crossing the street.

but then they wouldn't be "cool". only cool kids are allowed to strol leisurely across the street as slow as possible.

Word. The average person walks about 2/3 the speed I do. A lot of people walk 1/3 or even 2/5 the speed. And I don't look like I'm running. sure I look like I want to get somewhere, but damn these people don't have much in their lives to afford to be able to walk at 1 mph. And it's not like they're enjoying the sites. They'll be walking through a parking lot or something.
