When will XP be obsolete?

At some point new software won't work with XP. At some point it will stop getting security updates from Microsoft. Any guesses?

I don't care if it gets obsolete or not ... all the apps I want to use work with XP
And as to further updates, if SP2 is installed, then MS continues to support it
with no mention of when or if future support will end ... as to Vista, unless
it has some major new feature that I must have or need to use .. not at this
time .. not cost effective as yet .. especially with the benefits of Media Center Edition

That's useful thanks. Here's what it says in full:

Mainstream support will end two years after the next version of this product is released. Extended support will end five years after mainstream support ends.

Yes. Security updates for XP Pro will end 7 years after the release of Vista. Mainstream support ends two years after the release of Vista, and Extended support ends five years after Mainstream ends.

I believe Home is the same.

I believe there are exceptions. WIN98 support was supposed to end 2 or 3 years ago but was extended until just recently. This was due in part ot intercession by AARP on behalf of those of us on fixed incomes. The same may happen with XP since it is far superior to 98.

XP was already extended. Home was supposed to go out of support (or into Extended support, I forget which) in October of this year I think.

14 years of support not enough for you? 😉

Oh my.. how dare you say "WIN98" .. those are such POS words... you should die and rot in hell for stating such nonsense! POS POS POS POS

😀

I think that "classics" like Win98 and XP will live on forever. 😉

Seriously, XP has had the longest sales life of any Windows version. And there are certainly more XP PCs out there than anything else. That points to a service life for XP at least as long as Win98.

For a moment there I thought you were Link19. 😀

But support from Microsoft for several years yet would be a good thing.

dx 10 will make xp obsolete very quickly. It just needs to gain traction...which is why i said 2 years.

in the server world..xp will keep going and going.. they don't like quick change over there 🙂

Nah, couldn't have been Link19. Jlbenedict forgot to make everything bold.😉

There, that's better.🙂

As far as "obsolete" goes, IMHO there's a big difference between no longer supported and obsolete, though the first tends to force the second. Basic tasks like word editing you could do just fine, albiet slowly, on an old Win95 box. But would you want to go online with that computer? Prob not with it's lack of security support.

I think it will be a LONG time before I would relegate XP to "obsolete" status, but a much shorter length of time where I would say, "Why bother using it?"

It could go on for years. Win 98 is still around, and lots of folks still use it. Looking at the leaked cost of Vista, XP might be around longer than previous versions.

XP shouldn't be obsolete for a long long time because it is already a good OS and there is no need for bloated Vista. POS Windows 98/ME were obsolete as soon as Windows XP came out. WIndows 2000 won't be obsolete for some time yet as it is still a good quality true 32-bit OS.

Let's face it. The reason that Windows 2000 is still popular is because it has most of XP's features, but it can be pirated without consequences. 😉

I think you have a very good point there

Right! Activation is not required. And there is also a another category - that is, obsolescent. That means on the way to being obsolete, but not there yet.

I just want to be around in four or five years when some 16 year old starts telling Link19 that Windows XP is a POS and should die a painful death, because VISTA is the only real OS.

XP will always be a real OS because it in fact is a real OS, and not just some 16-bit DOS in disguise.

WIndows 98 should have died the painful death it deserved a long time ago because it was such a POS. Windows XP is a fine OS, so it should stay around for a long long time even after Vista is released.

It is really amazing how the immature, snot-noses reveal themselves in this forum. 🙁
