why would nvidia want to release lower/mid end cards when they cant release enough high end cards?

If they cant produce enough so called high end, then they cant produce enough mid end as the cards are basically the same but cut down. So they rather charge more as higher end than less with same card with cut down features

Seeing the performance of the GK104 part which now sits at the high end I can say I actually look forward to see the performance of the GK106 and GK108 parts, something I didn't always do in the past.

One of those Ti models would probably do me nicely on my next build I plan this Summer. Can't wait to see product and benchmarks.

Summer build FTW! Any kinks in IVB should be worked out and a full lineup of Kepler cards should be available. Also, cheaper SSDs. There is much to look forward to.

Their upper-mid cards will probably be GK104 dies that couldn't cut it as 680s for whatever reason that nVidia still wants to sell, so they'll get some hardware disabled and clocks adjusted and sold as 670s. However, eventually they will saturate the segment of the market that will pay for 670s and 680s and they'll be able to shift some of their production to other products. TSMC will also eventually bring more production capacity online, enabling more wafers to be produced.

I think performance of GK106 is going to be mediocre at best. It will probably have a great performance per watt ratio, but if the leaked specs are to be believed, then it won't be much faster than a gtx560ti.
